Dating apps were meant to make finding love easier.
Instead, they made it endless.
What started as innovation has slowly turned into fatigue. One of the reasons dating appsโ success rates are falling is because there is a silent psychological cycle happening behind the screen that slowly drains the humanity out of dating.
Our entire culture has been subtly conditioned by these platforms to view romance through a transactional lens. We adopt a detached catalog mindset that treats human beings like commodities to be evaluated, filed away, or discarded.
In the process, we forget something essential:
Behind every text, profile, or first date is a real person with a complex inner world, acute sensitivities, and a heart that can be bruised.
This erosion of empathy is driven by what psychologists call mechanistic dehumanization and depersonalizationโthe reduction of a living person into a cold, unfeeling digital object.
A landmark study by researchers Tila Pronk and Jaap Denissen identified a clear โrejection mindsetโ in online dating. The endless abundance of choice makes users more pessimistic, more hyper-critical, and 27% more likely to reject perfectly good matches the longer they stay in the system.
And then the emotional loop begins.
You enter dating with openness. You get met with ghosting, indifference, or disposable behaviour. It stings more than people admit.
So the mind adapts.
To survive emotional inconsistency, it does the only thing it knows how to doโit numbs out. You shut down vulnerability. You build a wall. And slowly, you begin to mirror the same behaviour that once hurt you: detachment, impatience, emotional withdrawal.
The paradox is tragic.
In trying to protect our hearts from a dehumanized dating culture, we become less human ourselves.
This is the culture we are now trying to shift.
Because this is exactly where matchmaking re-enters the pictureโnot as nostalgia, but as correction.
At The Date Alchemy, a lot of our work as matchmakers is deconditioning people from this mindset. We intentionally move people away from the catalog effect and back toward presence, intention, and emotional clarity.
We prioritize quality over quantity. So when we present a profile, it receives real attentionโnot a swipe, not a skim, but genuine consideration.
We create an experience where people are more accountable, more intentional, and more emotionally present. An environment that feels slower, but deeper. Structured, but human. Thoughtful, but real.
Because when you remove the noise, something powerful returns:
Respect.
Presence.
And the possibility of a real connection.
This is the shift happening in dating.
And this is why we exist.
