Why does DIY Sleep Training feel so Overwhelming?

I’m a mum of 3. And when my middle daughter was just 4 months old, I asked a friend—a sleep consultant—to help me sleep train her.

Why didn’t I do it myself?
Because I was utterly depleted.
Even as a sleep consultant, I couldn’t hold it all alone.

I sleep trained both my girls at 4 months old and fixed our lives.
I Co Slept and Breastfed for the first two years of my eldest daughters life.

It was amazing, a really great experience. It was easy, cozy and it was comfortable.

However, after the first year, I found that she didn't settle. She was continuously feeding throughout the night and my mental health was suffering.

I kept waking up in the morning and kept thinking there must be another way. I felt so lost, scared and depressed. I suffered in silence and just assumed it was a normal part of motherhood. I actually never reached out or spoke about my feelings. I reached a really dark place.

So when I was pregnant with both my second then third baby I knew I was going to Sleep Train.
I sleep Trained them both when they were 4 months old. My girls are 10, 7 and 4 years old now.

When I look back and I think about the difference in their upbringing its insane. When I did suffer Sleep Deprivation with my eldest, it sounds awful to say, I couldn’t wait to get her to nursery early on because I felt completely wiped out and wasn’t coping. I would wait for bedtime to approach but then filled with anxiety wondering what the nights will bring.

Sleep Training both the younger children meant freedom from sleep issues, rested sleep for us all, mental clarity, physical energy, happiness and most of all being able to focus on my Business. I was able to be present with my clients and the parents I work with because I am rested. I sleep well.

There is absolutely no fu***ng way that I could function in my business, run a household, bring up 3 kids whilst lacking sleep!

Signs not to ignore in your own Sleep

If your baby isn’t sleeping well at night and you suffer from anxiety and Sleep Deprivation, it can cause your body to be in a state of vigilance, making it difficult for you to sleep through the night even when your baby is sleeping!! This can cause you to be hyper-aware, tense and hypervigilant.

If you struggle with your own sleep; whether your baby is sleeping or not you maybe experiencing:

✨ Waking up at the smallest sounds
✨ Busy mind and feeling full in your head/restless or unable to calm
✨ Your muscles going into spasms as you are falling asleep or muscle tension
✨ Reoccurring dreams and nightmares
✨ Increased heart beat at night/palpitations
✨ Sweaty in the night
✨ Traumatic and catastrophic thinking at bedtime
✨ Tense Jaw or Pain in Jaw upon waking
✨ Wrist pain after sleeping

Sleep Deprivation versus True Self

Sleep Deprivation: Low energy, unpredictable moods, physical fatigue, brain fog, short term memory loss, lack of concentration, irritability, inability for presence within household and kids, relationship issues, isolation and Mental Health Issues

True Self: Increased energy levels, mental clarity, physical wellbeing, motivation for Self Care and Appearance, having evenings to yourself, rest, quiet, calm, peace, feelings of positivity, happiness, freedom, time with other members of the household, better relationships, desire to venture out, socialise, emotional regulation and no more having to rock or feed to sleep!

Lets face it - Sleep Deprivation is proper messed up. My kids are older now so we have all the naps dropped, no cots, no night feeds, established bedtime routine and varied sleep times because they go to bed when they feel tired! This is good for us because they have entered into the next stage of growth. They no longer need awake windows.

BUT! I have suffered Sleep Deprivation, for 2 years actually. I felt like a complete Zombie.

What if I told you that you can feed and rock your baby to sleep when we sleep train...

Who wants to hear their baby cry? Nobody really!
Some parents are ok with a little crying, some are ok with a few more tears and some approach me for non cry based sleep training.

One of the biggest misconceptions around sleep training is that you have to let your baby cry it out for sleep training to be successful. This couldn't be further from the truth and I hope over the coming months and years I can reach those mums who are exhausted and spread this message.

When we Sleep Train we will:

💤Use Habit Stacking Techniques to approach your babies sleep; this involves replacing one habit for another; so you can rock and feed your baby when we sleep train! This acts as a stepping stone to ease into a gentle sleep training technique.

💤 Optimise everything outside of sleep; milk, nutrition, daytime activities, temperament, parenting challengs, boundaries, screentime, and mental health

💤 Look into science behind human sleep and work with biological rhythms.

💤 Work with a range of methods from gentle hands on approach right the way through to stay in the room/supportive methods

💤 Use a number of Sleep Training Methods over a 24 hour period for every single wake up just to make sure that you and your partner feel comfortable during the process - I have used 4 sleep methods over 24 hours during sleep training! The expertise that comes with this is completely unique!

💤Adapt the traditional Sleep Training Methods to suit your parenting values!

“Will my baby cry — and will crying damage them?”

This is one of the most common questions I hear when families consider sleep coaching.

According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, not all stress is harmful.

💜 Positive stress is short, supported, and part of healthy development.
💜 Tolerable stress is bigger, but with safety and support, the brain recovers.
💜 Toxic stress occurs only when stress is severe and caregiving is absent.

Gentle sleep coaching may include some tears — but your baby is supported, safe, and not abandoned.

What is damaging is ongoing sleep deprivation.

Sleep supports:
• brain development
• emotional regulation
• immune health
• growth and repair

And parents need sleep too — exhaustion affects mental health, relationships, and how we show up for our children.
