TAIWAN IS ONE OF ASIA’S MOST UNDERESTIMATED LUXURY RETAIL MARKETS.

For international brands, understanding Taiwan goes far beyond knowing the major department stores.

Some of its most influential independent retailers and concept stores have spent decades building extraordinary client relationships, developing international brands and shaping how Taiwanese consumers discover fashion, design and luxury.

And the interesting part is that they are all different.

Some serve generations of UHNW clients. Some have evolved from retail into distribution and brand management. Others have built fiercely loyal communities around craftsmanship, lifestyle, hospitality or a very particular point of view.

This is why retail intelligence is never simply a list of stores.

It is understanding who owns them, who shops there, how they curate, what role they play locally — and whether your brand genuinely belongs in their world.

This is our first Y+O Asia Luxury Concept Store Map, beginning with Taiwan.

Next, we’ll continue across Asia.

Y+O Strategic Advisory works with founders, investors, leadership teams and institutions navigating international growth across fashion and luxury.

Our work sits at the intersection of cultural intelligence, brand positioning, retail strategy and cross-market growth.

A new way to enter China for international brands!

We are delighted to announce Y + O Strategic Advisory as the Official International Partner of On Time Show Shanghai for SS27.

For international brands, entering China has too often meant making a significant commitment before having the opportunity to properly understand the market.

We want to do this differently.

For SS27, selected international luxury, premium and contemporary brands — as well as international multi-brand showrooms — can come directly to Shanghai, present their collections, meet Chinese retailers and experience the market first-hand.

No requirement to appoint a local agency through the programme.
No additional wholesale sales commission to Y + O or On Time Show.
Dedicated Mandarin-speaking local support available.
Strategic China-market preparation before arrival.

For international showrooms, this creates something particularly interesting: the opportunity to bring selected brands from your existing portfolio into China while retaining your existing brand relationships.

China is not one buyer, one city or one route to market.

Not every Chinese retailer comes to Paris, Milan, London or New York.

Sometimes the best way to understand a market is to go there and meet it yourself.

International applications are now open for selected international brands + multi-brand showrooms.

The problem until now…

International brands have often been asked to commit to China before they’ve had the opportunity to properly understand the market. We believe the order should be reversed.

The partnership - straight forward like how we go to Paris, Milan & NYC!

For SS27, we’re creating a direct route for selected international luxury, premium and contemporary brands — and multi-brand showrooms — to Shanghai!

Before choosing a long-term China strategy, come and see who responds to the collection, what buyers ask for and where the opportunity actually sits.

Meet the people, buyers, your local customers and market yourself.

Some of the most interesting luxury retail is happening far beyond the obvious fashion destinations.

For this edition of the Y + O Independent Retail Guide, we look at Destination Stores — highly curated independents that understand something increasingly important about the luxury customer: fashion is only one part of how they spend.

From Niseko and Kiawah Island to Ibiza and Hong Kong, these retailers sit at the intersection of fashion, travel, hospitality and experience. Some operate seasonally, some within luxury hotels, while others continually reinvent their spaces through food, culture, events and changing concepts.

What connects them is not geography. It is a deep understanding of how their customer lives — what they wear, where they travel, how they spend their time and what makes them return.

For brands, that makes these doors particularly interesting.

Wholesale expansion is not about collecting doors. It’s understanding which customer, market and retail environment your brand belongs in.

And increasingly, the most relevant retail environment may not look like traditional fashion retail at all.

Growth is not simply about entering new markets, securing retail partners, appointing agencies, or choosing between a showroom and going solo.

It begins with understanding where the brand, customer, market and opportunity naturally align.

The strongest growth strategies are rarely the most obvious ones.

Position Position Position!

Most brands don’t have a pricing problem.
They have a position problem.

Trend — you chase attention, react, discount.
Timeless — you control perception, build desire.

Timeless holds. Trend accelerates.

Most brands sit in between —
trying to look premium while behaving like volume.

The moment your position is blurred, your brand dilutes.

DNA is not narrative.
Most brands confuse the two.
Campaigns, collections, content cycles — these are expression.
Without a clear DNA beneath them, the expression circulates. The brand does not accumulate.
DNA defines what a brand is.
Narrative is how that truth travels over time.
One builds recognition. The other builds meaning.
Only one is irreplaceable.

In cross-regional expansion, timing is rarely incidental.

February’s overlap of Lunar New Year, Ramadan, and Lent created an unusual symbolic convergence — one that amplified the cultural significance of Saudi Cup beyond sport.

In moments like this, context intensifies.

For brands such as The XO, participating was not simply a matter of visibility. It was a matter of alignment — entering a stage already charged with meaning.

Across Europe, the Middle East, and Asia Pacific, we often see expansion strategies anchored to commercial calendars.

Far fewer are built around cultural ones.

Yet cultural calendars influence behaviour.
They shift attention.
They recalibrate relevance.

In global brand building, cultural fluency does not sit at the surface of communication.

It shapes the architecture beneath it.

Without it, international growth risks visibility without resonance.
With it, expansion acquires relevance.

When Western super-brands enter Asia, the ones stay relevant and successful know how to play along with cultural moments carry meaning.

Prada, Bottega Veneta, and Valentino demonstrate a shared approach:
aligning brand expression with the cultural calendar — not forcing translation, but earning relevance.

At Y + O, we work with brands at this exact intersection:
where strategy, culture, and timing shape long-term credibility.
