Rory McIlroy just achieved a historic win at the US Masters golf tournament, taking the title for the second year in a row. He has turned one of golf’s longest running storylines into something else entirely. For so long, this place felt unresolved for him. His talent was never in doubt, and his dominance came in waves, but the majors (especially this one) kept slipping through his fingers. Near misses stacked up, Sundays tightened, and moments seemed to carry more weight than they should.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Then last year, it finally happened. The breakthrough and the release. The completion of the career Grand Slam after more than a decade of trying. A door that had been closed for years opened. And now a year later, he has walked straight back through it and slipped on a second Green Jacket. Afterwards, he said something extremely telling. He couldn’t believe he had waited 17 years for his first, and then he gets two in a row. Like London buses, you wait for ages, and then two come along at once.

With the Masters here, I wanted to share one of my favourite stories in golf.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
It’s a really important lesson. Confidence isn’t something you have or don’t have. It’s built by where your attention goes, especially when it matters most. Control your attention, and pressure often loses its grip.

What to Read Wednesdays?

In What I Talk About When I Talk About Running, Haruki Murakami reflects on running, writing and the discipline of showing up day after day. It’s a book that’s less about performance and more about consistency, solitude and the habits that truly shape who we become. This is a simple but powerful book about how meaning and growth is found in the act of showing up, again and again.

This was tough to watch. A moment like that, and it all coming down to one decision, one play, just one second. But this is what pressure does. When the stakes feel that high, your brain sees a threat and not just a game. Everything speeds up and tightens, and what’s simple becomes complicated.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
And then after comes the story we tell ourselves. That we ruined it, or we cost the team everything. That’s the hardest part to deal with. Pressure will test your skill and your identity.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Here’s a short video explaining what pressure does to the brain. When you know what pressure is doing to you, you can respond instead of react. And that can make all the difference.

The holy month of Ramadan has come to an end once again. It’s a time that expands our spiritual depth, while also providing many mental and physical benefits. It’s now time to celebrate this beautiful period with the magnificent celebration of Eid. The peak of the fasting experience is the tradition that comes with Eid - kids will wake up with excitement and anticipation, they will put on their best clothes and prepare for a day of festivities visiting family and friends. They will sing and dance as they collect their Eidy gifts, they will give thanks, and they will eat. They will eat a lot. The less fortunate are treated with great care and kindness, and people will show gratitude for their health and good fortune by giving charitably to those in need.

As Muslims across the globe celebrate, let’s spare a thought for all of our brothers and sisters (Muslims and non-Muslims) who aren’t doing so well. This is indeed a wonderful time, but we shouldn’t forget the cloud of darkness that still looms over many. Sending special prayers to these people today.

Eid Mubarak!

In a recent appearance on David Senra’s Founders podcast, Marc Andreessen (the co-founder of venture capital firm a16z) set off a wave of debate with a statement saying that he operates with “zero introspection,” and that self reflection is an unnecessary hindrance to performance and building at a high level.

This is an idea that is confident, contrarian and maybe even compelling (on the surface). But beneath the confidence is something that I find really troubling. A misunderstanding so fundamental that it misguides as well as actively pulls people away from the very mechanisms that make growth, judgment and real excellence possible.

In The World Appears, .pollan explores the unsettling idea that what we experience as reality is something the mind is constantly shaping. Blending neuroscience, philosophy and perception, the book shows how our view of the world is always filtered and constructed. This is a fascinating read that leaves you a little less certain, and a lot more curious.

The world feels darker lately. But history has never been shaped by people who looked away. It’s always been shaped by those who refused to accept injustice as normal, and had the courage to say so.

Every generation reaches moments like this, when silence feels easier than speaking and apathy feels safer than caring. I know it sounds cliché, and I know it’s something people have said a lot over the last few years, but it’s still true. The world only changes when ordinary people refuse to stay silent.
