Nulty+ We’re award-winning lighting designers who delight and inspire with our creations. We work with architects and designers to make spaces spectacular

We’re an award-winning lighting design practice with one simple mission: to delight, excite and inspire people with our creations. Whether we’re working on a restaurant, a luxury home, a hotel or a public square, we believe that how a place feels is just as important as how it looks – and we never forget the importance of atmosphere. We’re admired for our emphasis on creating sustainable and energ

y-efficient lighting schemes, and we’re known for constantly pushing boundaries in terms of design and attention to detail. We don’t let our egos get in the way, though, and we collaborate closely with the architects and designers on any given project to make sure everything works together beautifully. Currently leading the way in lighting design, and it’s one heck of an exciting journey. Clients we have worked with:

Selfridges Beauty Hall, Oxford Street. Our brief was to create an elegant aesthetic while delivering naturally flattering lighting for skincare consultations and makeup application.

At first glance, the lighting scheme is pared back and harmonious. We developed a bespoke ring pendant to complement the symmetry and proportions of the coffered ceiling, preserving the decorative details of the architecture and keeping the sight lines clear from every vantage point.

Daniel Blaker, Creative Director, Nulty comments: “The clean datum line of pendants is perfectly aligned with the ceiling. Light is meant to simply float; effortlessly, pure and precise.'

Once customers are immersed in the space, only then do they feel the true impact of the lighting. Strategically positioned spotlights featuring Nulty and Xicato’s pioneering LED Beauty Module produce white light with a subtle ‘rosy tinge’ – a more honest quality of light where skin tones appear naturally richer.

This industry-leading solution balances two extra high CRI LED sources with a softer beauty LED engine and is engineered to maintain true-to-life colour matching for customers testing out product shades.

The arrival sequence sets the tone at The Burlian, an elegant workspace at 80 New Bond Street.

An arched doorway in green stone frames the entrance, revealing a striking walkway that leads into the double-height reception. We used concealed layers of light to create a sense of rhythm and emphasise the materiality of the wood panels and bronze-finished archways.

Inside, our vision was to create a beautiful quality of light by blurring the boundaries between the architecture and lighting design. Every detail elevates the design – from the curved vaulted soffit, enhanced by tapered backlit fabric, to the way the lighting shifts between warm and cool tones to mimic daylight.

The final scheme is the result of close collaboration. Brought onto the project from the outset, we worked creatively with the wider team, building on each other’s ideas to deliver a beautifully engineered solution.

Our founder Paul Nulty recently sat down with Sam Koerbel to record an episode for his LytePOD podcast.

The conversation covers topics that really matter to Paul – the importance of empathy in design, why sharing knowledge is more vital than ever, and the challenges of running a global practice while still being a designer at heart.

Above all, the overriding message is that lighting design is for people. It’s something he says a lot, along with why we should all be interrogating the brief to understand who the end user is, how a space will be used, and what they should feel.

Begin with the why, then move on to the how, and everything else follows – the story, the experience, and the confidence to defend your work later down the line.

We hope you enjoy it.

A rare project set within an area of extraordinary heritage and natural beauty, The Chedi Hegra is quietly spectacular – designed to feel like a natural extension of the landscape.

The guiding principle for the lighting design was restraint. Light only where it’s essential, integrated carefully to preserve the darkness of this UNESCO World Heritage site in AlUla.

Across the landscape, this meant curating the overall composition of light to achieve a gentle glow while minimising light spill. At a more human scale level, subtle details enhance the experience, seen in how the traditional lanterns placed at strategic points allow guests to carry light with them onto the stargazing terraces, with no need for permanent fixtures.

The complexity of the project and remoteness of its location made this a very special project. We were proud to work with our project collaborators and to make the lighting design come to life.

What role does light play in a space crafted entirely around sound? This was our design challenge at Saikindo – a Japanese-inspired listening bar at the Four Seasons in Abu Dhabi, which is all about taking root and being at one with the music.

The soundscape takes precedence in the Hi-Fi Bar, where we integrated layers of light to make the DJ station resonate with warmth and drama. A backlit ceiling frames the turntables, bathing the bar in golden light to amplify the energy of the space. Light levels around the perimeter seating areas are soft and subdued by contrast, designed to invite deep, uninterrupted listening.

In the soundproofed private room, light is concealed within the modular timber architecture, heightening the ambience but keeping the focus on the bold prints and rich wood details. Visually understated yet highly adaptable, the system allows guests to adjust the mood and intensity of the lighting to match the style and tempo of the music.

For National Apprenticeship Week 2026, we want to talk about our new apprenticeship programme and why it matters to all of us here at Nulty.

Lighting design is something that you learn on the job, working on real-life projects and as part of a collaborative team. This is exactly what our apprenticeship programme is all about – a fully supported pathway into the lighting design industry for people starting out, combining hands-on experience with a solid grounding in theory.

Based with our London team, the two-year scheme is a paid placement that aims to give aspiring creatives . In the studio they’ll learn how to develop lighting design concepts and gain practical experience working on live projects. They’ll also study for an industry-recognised Advanced Diploma in Illumination Engineering with the BHA School of Lighting.

The programme is open to school or college leavers, or anyone looking to retrain in lighting design. Applicants must have the right to live and work in the UK and a genuine interest in design.

Read our programme guidelines to find out more: https://www.nultylighting.co.uk/blog/nulty-launches-an-apprenticeship-scheme/

Carbone London recreates the glamour of New York’s cult Italian restaurant within the former U.S. Embassy building on Grosvenor Square. With the main restaurant situated below ground, this project gave us the opportunity to completely augment the ambience and capture the emotional warmth and visible sparkle of the New York original.

Central to the design is how the interplay between light and surfaces enhances the intricacy of Ken Fulk’s interior narrative. Our scheme helps establish the bar as a natural focal point, as concealed layers of light activate the amber-fluted glasswork and brass detailing, making the whole space resonate with warmth, tactility and drama. The mood then completely shifts in the dining area, where picture lights frame the bespoke artwork collection and soft, intimate light levels encourage guests to settle in for the night.
