The London Handel Players perform at the Brighton Early Music Festival this evening.

They will perform in The Fairy Queen - Purcell’s much-loved setting of the spellbinding midsummer night’s dream evoked in Shakespeare’s play, featuring BREMF Emerging Artists singers alongside the London Handel Players.

The Gramophone Awards were announced last night - Congratulations to Peter Donohoe who won in the Orchestral category.

The album 'Bacewicz Orchestral Works Vol. 2' recorded by the BBC Symphony Orchestra and Sakari Oramo was given the Orchestral Award at the ceremony last night. The album includes Bacewicz's Piano Concerto, with Peter Donohoe as piano soloist.

"it’s evident that in Oramo and the BBC SO we have a conductor and orchestra who are entirely inside this music. And who better to champion the Piano Concerto than Peter Donohoe (it needs mentioning even though this is the Orchestral category), a keyboard lion of the old school who takes a very audible relish in exploring unfamiliar repertoire, and performing it with the same bravura that he brings to Rachmaninov or Beethoven?

Together, these musicians have the measure of Bacewicz’s language: that life-affirming, utterly idiosyncratic fusion of passion and rigour; of rhythmic drive and dancing, glistening humour."

Andrey Gugnin performs Prokofiev's Third Piano Concerto with two different orchestras this October.

On 8th October, he performs with the Filarmonica Brasov in Romania, conducted by Gerald Karni:

The Ligeti Quartet perform Steve Reich at the Schwarzman Centre, Oxford, this evening.

"Steve Reich’s Different Trains is one of the defining works of the late 20th century, earning the composer a Grammy Award for Best Contemporary Composition in 1989 and inspired by the train journeys Reich took as a child across the United States during the Second World War.

Fragments of speech from train conductors, Holocaust survivors and Reich's governess are interwoven with live strings, creating a haunting sonic tapestry. For this performance, the tape track has been remastered for spatialised sound, animating it with a vividness beyond what listeners may previously have heard, and brought to life alongside the Ligeti Quartet.

Alongside it is Justė Janulytė’s Circle for a Square, a reimagining of a work originally conceived for four string quartets that plays with the sense of space and time, and Reich's Triple Quartet, a three-movement work of exhilarating momentum and intensity, written for three string quartets.

Three different journeys, with the groundbreaking Ligeti Quartet as bold and brilliant guides.

Guy Johnston plays Elgar's Cello Concerto with the Armenia State Symphony Orchestra tomorrow with Marios Papadopoulos conducting. The concert at the Aram Khachaturian concert hall, Yerevan, Armenia, has an all-Elgar programme, with the Cello Concerto in the first half and the Enigma Variations in the second half.

We then look ahead to the Hatfield House Chamber Music Festival of which Guy is Artistic Director. The Two Moors Festival opened yesterday. Since 2001, the Festival has evolved into one of the most distinctive classical music festivals in the UK. They welcome people to their events held in rural venues across Exmoor and Dartmoor. In 2020, the internationally acclaimed violinist Tamsin Waley-Cohen was appointed as the Festival’s Artistic Director.

Violinist Ellinor D'Melon performs Vivaldi's Four Seasons with the Norrlands Opera Symphony Orchestra conducted by Dominic Limburg as part of their collaboration with the Malandain Ballet Biarritz.

On stage are 22 dancers, all classically trained but with a contemporary expression that has become characteristic of Thierry Malandain’s refined and poetic style. *The Four Seasons* is a playful and magnificent choreographic tapestry by two Baroque masters: Antonio Vivaldi and the lesser-known Giovanni Antonio Guido. The music moves from the familiar to the surprising, creating a rich, poetic backdrop for Malandain’s harmonious and energetic choreography.
