You only sink twice – the M.S. London Statesman did anyway. The builder’s model of which is shown here and will be sold on 21st April for £2,000-3,000.

Such bad luck – she was unwittingly caught up & sunk twice in conflicts. On the 10th July 1972, during the Vietnam War, she was unloading a cargo of rice in South Vietnam when her engine room suddenly flooded, and she sank by the stern - sabotage by the Viet Cong was suspected.

Refloated, she continued her trade & during the Iran–Iraq War, she was one of four merchant ships in a convoy outward bound in the Bandar Imam Khomeini Channel which were attacked by Iraqi aircraft with Exocet missiles hitting all four ships.

A rare 30in. Terrestrial Globe C.1890 is going under the hammer next month for £3,000-£5,000.

Made by the brothers William Johnston (1802-1888) & Andrew Keith (1804-1871) in Edinburgh from the mid-19th century. They became the preeminent makers in the United Kingdom & as a result were offered a Royal Appointment by Queen Victoria - her Arms are present on this example. This format was the largest example the Johnston firm produced - the first of example of which was exhibited at the Great Exhibition of 1851 in Hyde Park London, where it received numerous medals.

It has 36 printed gores signed in cartouche, principal steamer routes with distances & is mounted in brass meridian with wooden stand – it’s a great piece - you just need to find a place to put it!

A colonial silver two-handled vase presented to the owner & master of the Record-Breaking O***m clipper Red Rover to commemorate her launch is expected to fetch £8,000-12,000 in our next month.

To keep up with the high demand of taking O***m between India & China, Red Rover a fast, sleek clipper was constructed to complete three round trips per year rather than the traditional one passage a year.

Red Rover departed the Hooghly River at Calcutta in December 1829 with 800 chests of o***m, and arrived at Macao on 17th February 1830, after sailing through the northeast monsoon in the China Sea. An equally fast return passage to Calcutta resulted in a round trip of 86 days, beating all previous British records.

The vase was presented to William Clifton Esq for his indefatigable attention in Superintending the building of the Bark Red Rover and for his energy & Nautical Skill in commanding that vessel between the Port of Calcutta & Canton.
