Some great performances seen on day 1 of ascot . The track looks to be riding fairly so hats off to ground staff! I finished the day around evens which I’ll take on a day which had some very open races-

Ascot day 1 continued-

18:15 again like a number of races on day 1, an open looking race. I respect the creditable of Willie Mullins horse in this, but the price for me is too short so I’m going to look elsewhere. My selection in this race is ALSAKIB, they don’t run in handicaps often, but the three times they have, they have won two of them. They won over 1m 4f here at ascot by 3 lengths at the end of last season. I believe this relatively lightly raced 4 year old will progress further this season. They are carrying top weight, but are the class horse in the line up, with Oisin riding on a track the horse likes, I feel represents more value than the current favourite.

Ascot day 1 continued -
17:05 no surprise to see something win this at a price. The last 6 runnings have resulted in winning sp’s of 7/1, 14/1, 66/1, 16/1, 12/1 & 10/1. With only 3 favourites winning in the last 24 runnings, it’s there for worth looking for something at a double figure price. Pied pier ran second in the cesarewitch when last seen on the flat. He was ridden by Ryan Moore that day, so it’s interesting to see that he has opted to ride another horse in this race today my lyka for Willie Mullins. The stats about 3 favourite winning this race, the last two was the mullin Moore combination so I would t ever rule them out despite the stats. However with such a big field I can’t choose something at such a short price (5/1 currently). There’s two I like which are going opposite ways in the handicap BOHER ROAD which will be my main selection, this horse is on the upgrade and is rated 9lbs higher than their comfortable 6 1/2 length win last time out. This front runner looks to be loving life on the flat currently, coming from a yard that has won this race before. The other mention is tritonic, who finished 3rd in this race last year, they have dropped 5lbs since then and could make the frame again or better.

17:40 I respect a number of these horses, some are going up in grade, some down, so a little tricky to gauge. I would usually side with horses that are going down in grade, however I’m struggling to get away from BOTANICAL, who was very eye catching in their eased down 3 length win last time out, they are more than capable of stepping up to listed company and could even progress beyond that from what I’ve seen of them so far.

Ascot day 1 continued-
15:45 there looks to be a fair bit of pace on in this race, so I’m going to look for something that will be ridden just off the pace. I’ve got to side with the horse that just keeps on improving BIG EVS, won at the breeders cup on their last run last year, then opened up their campaign this year with a 1 1/2 length win at York. They are going to be running against older rivals in this race, however they look to have trained on from their 2 year old campaign and with a record of 5 wins from 7 runs, they haven’t shown me a reason as why not to back them. Another horse at an each way price that’s worth a mention is twilight calls, they finished second last year and then 4th the year before. With the pace that’ll likely be on, could suit their style and with Ryan Moore also booked to ride, they look a fair eachway bet.

16:25 very unoriginal but I have to be with with favourite NOTABLE SPEECH. The form of the guineas is looking quite strong with the form being franked by multiple horses. He had rosalian covered that day and I can’t see how that form will be reversed in this. I wouldn’t be surprised if they finish as 1-2 in this as well, but I have to stick with notable speech.

Day 1 of royal ascot is upon us!

14:30 relatively open race with a few French challengers making the journey over for this. Some big names have won this in the past such as baaed, frankel, canford cliffs & goldikova. I don’t feel this race has that same star quality among them this year. A number of these are coming from the lockinge stakes where audience won that day. For me on the day I thought CHARYN was a tad unlucky not to have won again that day. He’s a horse that doesn’t go down without a fight and I think this 1 mile at ascot will be up his street.

15:05 again another open race. Aiden O’Brien has trained 10 winners of this race. I think the winner will come from the O’Brien family this year again, but in the shape of aidens son Joseph, who trains COWARDOFTHECOUNTY. The form lines of their debut win read relatively well. The horse it beat into second that day (by 2 1/2 lengths) whistlejacket has since won a listed race, beating arizona blaze by 3 3/4. Now what’s interesting about that, is that last time out, the current second fav for this race Camille Pissarro (train by aiden obrien) was actually beaten by Arizona blaze. So if you take the form lines literally cowardofcounty ‘should’ have the comfortable measure of Camille Passarro in this.
