Save the Date!

Steve Burden works most in painting to investigate dystopian themes and ideas associated with British housing estates, partly inspired by his personal experience growing up on the Pepys (a brutalist high-rise council estate in Deptford, south London).

Self Portrait (2020), 2021. 80x60cm.

Every year I clean my brushes on a canvas (this one is 2020’s palette). It’s taken me 9months to get round to painting this years Portrait - the mask and skull is definitely an omnipresent theme to the work. ☠️

The persona. Derived from the Latin word for mask this archetype represents the different metaphorical social masks we wear in different situations.

The City in British Art

20/05/2021

Delighted to have been invited to speak at The Working Class British Art Networks next event (booking link in Bio):

The City in British Art

Our cities developed around capitalist ideals as centres for wealth and commerce leading to hierarchies of experience with unwritten rules of who should be where, who will feel safe, who belongs and what modes of behaviour are accepted. The city has long been a source of inspiration, this event explores this theme from the perspective of working-class artists offering a fresh perspective on a familiar art historical narrative.

The Working Class British Art Network is a research group of the British Art Network and provides a platform for discussions around working-class identity in British art. It asks how we can take the language used by artists in their work to pave the way for greater inclusivity.

The event will be chaired by Dr Katie Beswick and the speakers are:

Hannah Aria, Artist
Steve Burden, Artist
Kirsteen Macdonald, Independent Curator and Researcher
Christopher Samuel, Artist
