Hello everyone!
If you’re reading this post, it means either you are actively engaged with me, or somehow the algorithms just decided to show you this post (even then you might have simply scrolled down without reading).
In that case, if you are reading, please know that effective immediately I am making this instagram account PRIVATE, until I decide what I want to do with it.
I am deliberately choosing/wishing to have less social media presence, and because I no longer HAVE TO have a public presence, I can go private.
I also may stop using instagram altogether, or unfollow all so I won’t be tempted to explore my feed.
I know I may start missing bits and pieces of your lives, but I feel it may liberate me to have more meaningful and intentional connections.

As my son is becoming more and more aware of the worldly things, we are having deeper and deeper conversations about my motherland, my home 🇹🇷.

For the occasion of , our , we are watching the TV series of on youtube, pausing and explaining all the non-rational, almost miraculous turn of events, along with the selfless acts of many and genius of .

Following ‘s instagram account, I was quite excited for the release of her new book . But, because I already had too many work-related books lined up, I wasn’t giving myself the permission to indulge in pleasure reading.
Then, my sister ‘s book club in Brighton (which I can never join due to logistics) chose this book (I might have had some impact), and it was just the leverage for me to dive right into it.

This novel is heavy.
Literally and figuratively.
So heavy that, when I was discussing some of the brutalities of the men of power through history with my young adult child, I am lacking ways and words to explain the why’s.

A brilliant tale across geographies and times, it is putting light on some of the most pressing conflicts of our time:
water
genocide (particularly of Yazidis)
human trafficking (particularly for organs)
child brides
mental health
ethics (in business, in politics, in art, in intellectual domains)

I know I can never see (it is now sunken), or the antique /archeological sites across Iraq and Syria (destroyed by ISIS most recently), but I can (and will) visit the British Museum, this time with a keener attention to the Assyrian civilization and particularly to the clay tablets of the and the of .

They say studying is good for learning, but it’s better to practice what you study, which is why our Study Group is encouraged to do a lot of practice…
But an even better way to learn is to teach it: my aspiration…

Lebanon is too precious to abandon.

When we lived in Lebanon, I had encounter with many proud Lebanese because of my work and because of my school-age child. I still don’t think the world understands how resilient, intelligent, cultured, humorous and tolerant Lebanese people are. I am hopeful one day we will go back and Lebanon will have rised once again from its ashes…

Lebanon is too precious to abandon.
It’s also too small to matter in the scope of things. You can drive across the country in one day.
It’s also one of the densest populated places, and literally a melting pot of all sorts of religions, ethnicities, languages, subcultures.
It also means, anywhere being bombed is just about 5 minutes from someone you know, somewhere you care about.
