The 21st of April marked the first successful operation carried out at Cure Childrenโ€™s Hospital of Zimbabwe - the country's first facility to provide life-changing medical care to children free of charge.
In the picture Doctor Colleen Msasanure and colleagues.

โ€œKidsOR have partnered with CURE International, Inc. to provide equipment for the two operating rooms within the hospital. The hospital treats children with severe deformities, referred from public hospitals for specialist attention.
We are thrilled to be working together to provide first-class care, which will transform lives and improve the future for thousands of children with a treatable disability.โ€

World Health Day is observed every year on April 7 since 1950. This day is aimed at creating awareness of a specific health theme and also to highlight a priority area of concern for the World Health Organisation (WHO).โฃ
โฃ
Other aim of this day is to acknowledge the efforts of healthcare workers and the success of the WHO. The focus of this year's World Health Day is to ensure equitable access to healthcare facilities around the globe.โฃ
โฃ
The theme of this year's World Health Day is "building a fairer, healthier world". This is a priority area of concern for the WHO as the COVID-19 crisis put the spotlight back on the inequity in healthcare system and how some people are able to stay healthier simply because of where they are born and their economic conditions.โฃ
โฃ
WHO added that most of the diseases faced by these groups are preventable. The WHO stated, "As COVID-19 has highlighted, some people are able to live healthier lives and have better access to health services than others-entirely due to the conditions in which they are born, grow, live, work and age." The organisation has proposed a four-step strategy of working together, collecting reliable data, tackling inequities and acting beyond borders to achieve this goal.

Africa is estimated to lose over $1billion a year on medical tourism abroad, according to World Bank statistics for 2015. Africa is exporting money and patients to the East, especially India.โฃ
โฃ
Professor Khama Rogo of the World Bank says that much as Africa is heavily resource constrained, a lot of money is spent on treatment abroad that could have instead helped develop capacity locally.โฃ
โฃ
according to Rogo, we are exporting money and patients to the East, especially India, which has largely contributed to a flourishing private health sector at the expense of Africaโ€™s.โฃ
โฃ
Capacity and quality still remain a major problem for the region and Uganda in particular. For any hospital to build the confidence of clients for major procedures, it must have a history of success. Most referrals abroad are for oncology, cardiovascular and joint or spinal surgeries.โฃ
โฃ
There is an urgent need for partnerships between government and private healthcare providers across Africa but private operators are wary of confusing government policy, governments making and breaking promises and corruption at all levels.

Each year, we recognize World TB Day on March 24. This annual event commemorates the date in 1882 when Dr. Robert Koch announced his discovery of Mycobacterium tuberculosis, the bacillus that causes tuberculosis (TB). World TB Day is a day to educate the public about the impact of TB around the world.โฃ
โฃ
TB remains one of the worldโ€™s deadliest infectious killers. โฃ
โฃ
This is especially critical in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic that has put End TB progress at risk, and to ensure equitable access to prevention and care in line with WHOโ€™s drive towards achieving Universal Health Coverage.

[repost] Tanzania has sworn its first female Muslim president, Samia Suluhu Hassan, days after she announced the death of her predecessor John Magufuli who suddenly died of a heart attack.โฃ
โฃ
The 61-year-old politician was the countryโ€™s vice president under Magufuli's presidency, and her sudden rise to the top of Tanzanian politics has made history in the country of 58 million and the continent. Hassan is the third Muslim president in the country's history and joins Ethiopia's Sahle-Work Zewde as the only other current serving female head of state in Africa. โฃ
โฃ
In a televised swearing-in ceremony Friday, Hassan, who is also affectionately known as Mama Samia, in a sign of high respect that she is held in the country, took the oath of office in Dar es Salaam before inspecting troops at a military parade and receiving a cannon salute. โฃ
โฃ
She described her sorrow at the events leading to her inauguration and urged unity. โ€œToday I took the highest oath of office in mourning,โ€ she said. "This is a time to bury our differences, and be one as a nation," she added. "This is not a time for finger pointing, but it is a time to hold hands and move forward together."โฃ
โฃ
Under the constitution, she will serve the remainder of Magufuli's second five-year term, which does not expire until 2025. โฃPhoto: STR/AFP

Ghana has become the first country to receive coronavirus vaccines through the Covax vaccine-sharing initiative.โฃ
โฃ
A delivery of 600,000 doses of the AstraZeneca vaccine arrived in Accra on Wednesday. The first recipients are due to be healthcare workers.โฃ
โฃ
The Covax scheme aims to reduce the divide between rich countries and poorer nations unable to buy doses.โฃ
โฃ
The programme is planning to deliver about two billion vaccine doses globally by the end of the year.

If we wanted to, we could list a COVID-19 moment for every month of 2020.

We all know that the onset of the coronavirus pandemicโ€”first in China and then worldwideโ€”overwhelmed news coverage this year. And with good reason. Itโ€™s the first large-scale global pandemic in 100 years. At the time this article was published, it has killed more than 1.6 million people worldwide. And over 73 million people have been diagnosed with the infectious disease.

But a lot of other things happened in global health in 2020โ€”and many of us may not have heard about them. Here are some of the moments we didnโ€™t and wonโ€™t forget.
