Have you ever been told you should “leave your comfort zone”?
Have you ever thought to yourself, “I should leave my comfort zone”?
Do you have any idea what this place—the place outside your comfort zone—is called?
Were you ever taught at school what the place outside the comfort zone was called, even when your well-meaning teachers suggested you should leave it?
We learn so little about the process of change that I describe in my book, Taming Tigers.
Some writers have named the place outside the comfort zone the Growth Zone. This is cute. And it’s true. But not at all helpful, in my view.
I call it the Ugly Zone.
You may well be growing out there. But that does not prepare you for the emotions that will come when you are far from home and all alone. Because change happens, essentially from our home base and all alone inside, with just the harsh reflection of the mirror for company.
People have told me that’s not a good name. People have told me that I need to make it sound positive. But I think we need to know what to expect en route to a positive outcome.
I feel ugly emotions out there. Because I feel as though I look uncool, unsure, and incompetent—a little ugly. I feel like the wheels may come off. I feel like I may fail, which has consequences for me and for my children. And I don’t like feeling or looking ugly. I don’t like hard consequences. So, I want to avoid this zone.
And I guess you and your team members do too.
But I’m also guessing that you want to grow, do great things, and be able to help your team members connect with their desire and power to do so too.
If we are going to deliver transformation and high-performance, we are going to enter the Ugly Zone. And when we are in the Ugly Zone, we want to come home to the pretty zone. The comfort zone.
Therefore, we must COMMIT to crossing the Ugly Zone and getting to the even better comfort zone beyond.
If you have a team of people who have truly committed, you are in a very powerful position to deliver change.
This week, our January INSPIRE! Course students are learning how to do exactly this.
