🚨Cars are designed with crumple zones, areas built to crush on impact to protect the rest of the vehicle. So why, in AI governance, are we using humans to do the exact same thing?

Tech anthropologist Madeleine Clare Elish calls it the "Moral Crumple Zone." When a highly complex, automated system fails, the human placed "in the loop" often ends up bearing the legal and moral liability.

What ever happened to the office beanbag?

Well, the breakout zone has a brand-new neon sign that says “Dream Big.”
The problem is nobody’s in it.

It’s not that people stopped liking sage-green walls, beanbags or even the free coffee. It’s that they stopped believing the room had anything to do with the work. For a while, innovation got treated like an interior design problem. And for a moment, it worked—at least at the level where nobody was asking what any of it was actually for.

Because when growth is easy, and money is cheap, you can afford to confuse the appearance of innovation with the mechanics of it.

But innovation was never furniture.
It’s incentives.
Decision-making.
Risk.
Speed.
Trust.

The beanbag was just the bit you could photograph. And people always knew.

They knew when:
