Community is central to what we do at Sortera. We believe it’s important to make a positive difference in the places where we live and work.

Since Sortera launched, that’s meant getting involved in a wide range of community activity, from working with initiatives like Exchanging Places and RideSmart, to visiting schools and nurseries, making various donations, and supporting local events. Much of this work focuses on education, safety and practical support, helping build understanding and stronger connections at a local level.

These activities sit alongside our day to day operations and reflect the role we play across London, not just as a waste management provider, but as part of our wider communities. On Global Community Engagement Day, it’s a good moment to recognise the value of this work and the people involved in making it happen.

We recently welcomed some of our customers to our Edmonton site to see Project Mercury, our largest infrastructure investment to date.

The visit focused on the new light and heavy processing lines, giving customers the opportunity to see some of the equipment in action and better understand how materials are processed across the site. It also provided a chance to talk through how this investment is improving the facility and strengthening our capabilities moving forward.

We were also pleased to welcome Henrik Gustafsson from Sortera HQ, who joined the visit.

With the first customer visit of the year, it felt only right to fire up the BBQ for the first time in 2026 (even with the wet weather), with bacon rolls back on the menu. A well done to everyone involved for helping make the day run smoothly.

The construction sector has made great progress in metal recovery, but to fully optimise resource efficiency, more materials need to be captured and reintroduced into the supply chain.

Why recycle metal?
Steel and aluminium are infinitely recyclable, meaning they can be reused over and over without losing quality. Recycling metal uses dramatically less energy than producing it from raw materials, significantly cutting down on carbon emissions. Additionally, metal recovery reduces the need for resource-intensive mining, helping to preserve natural ecosystems while maintaining a steady supply of materials for construction.

At Sortera, we ensure metals from construction waste are efficiently recovered, sorted, and processed for reuse, supporting the industry's transition to a circular economy.

This week is Road Safety Week, a timely reminder that safety on our roads is everyone’s responsibility and something that’s always front of mind for us at Sortera.

Through our ongoing work with the Metropolitan Police’s Exchanging Places initiative, we’ve helped hundreds of cyclists, pedestrians, and school pupils across London see the road from a new perspective, stepping into the cab of an HGV to understand visibility, awareness, and the challenges around larger vehicles.

We’re also proud to support early road safety education through RideSmart, a programme designed to help children build confidence and stability on their bikes, developing safe habits that last a lifetime.

At Sortera, road safety isn’t a week-long focus, it’s part of our culture, embedded across every depot, driver, and community we serve.

Today, we pause to remember and honour those who gave their lives in service.

At 11am, our teams across Sortera will join the national two minutes of silence in recognition of the courage, sacrifice, and resilience of all who served, past and present.

We will remember them.
