Designed for people who are in a vulnerable space when wanting change. Often this occurs because although things may outwardly look good in your life inside you are feeling like something is missing and you cannot put your finger on it. Maybe you are facing redundancy or just want to discover your next step; whether it be a new career, starting a business or creating a completely different life.

Because you have been looking at your life through your own eyes from the same perspective for so long that it is hard to see what needs changing, you just know something does. I have been there, done that and got the T-shirt - and written the book! I know what it takes to life the life your heart's desire and I specialise in coaching people who want to take the time and discover what their they want. Instead of just taking the next step because it is there, this is about defining your own rules for living and making new choices. My book “The Right T-Shirt, Write Your Own Rules, Live the Life You Want” is written just for that that moment in a person’s life when they realise that although they have been there, done that and got the T-shirt, it is in fact the wrong one. I have a variety of programs: individual retreats in Spain, as well as monthly coaching programs

" I love my work, I don't really want to retire".

When I first heard this from one of my clients, I wasn't surprised.

She wasn't burned out or counting the days, she genuinely loved what she did. But her company had an age limit and she was getting close.

The challenge wasn't leaving work. The challenge was answering the question:
"Why do I have to give up something that brings me so much satisfaction?"

It’s a great question because retirement isn't always about escaping something you dislike.

But it can be about creating space for something new. And in her case getting ready for the inevitable time when she had to leave.

During our conversations, she started to explore what she enjoyed most about work.
Was it the challenge? The people? The feeling of making a difference? The satisfaction of creating a great solution?

Once she understood that, she realised she didn't need to "retire from" those things.

She needed to find new ways to bring them into the next chapter. Retirement doesn't have to mean closing a door, it’s about being flexible and seeing what other doors could be interesting.

The biggest mistake many people make is waiting until they have to retire before thinking about what comes next. You don't have to dislike your job to start planning your future.

In fact, loving your work is often the best reason to start early.

Because the question isn't:
"When should I stop?"
It's:
"What do I want my next chapter to look like?"

Retirement Myth: "I'll finally have nothing to do."

Ah yes... the dream. No alarm clock. No meetings. No deadlines.

No one asking, "Can you just do this one quick thing?" (which is never quick, by the way)

You imagine retirement will involve long lazy mornings, endless cups of coffee and maybe the occasional decision about whether today is a beach day or a sofa day.

Or as a friend said me to recently; once you retire you spend all your day cleaning out cupboards and tidying up your life!

And yes... retirement can hold all this.

But here's what surprises many people. Retirement doesn't automatically create a fulfilling life.

It creates space but what you do with that space is up to you and all those things you were going to do “one day” – well one day has arrived!

Now is the time to look at that long list of possibilities and work out where to start.
You haven't retired (or about to retire) to do nothing. You’ve retired to do more of what makes you feel great about yourself, and to have fun whilst feeling fulfilled.

Retirement isn't about filling time.

It's about creating a life you don't need a holiday from.

What is the one thing you've always said you'd do "one day"?

I thought learning to sail would be simple.

After all I did it when I was a kid. You get on a boat. You put the sails up. You enjoy the sunshine, or in my case when I was a child the rain! (UK sailing:-)

Turns out... there is a lotT more to it.

There are new words to learn (and a whole new language that initially sounds like someone is making it up!).

There are new skills, new equipment, new rules and a completely different environment to understand.

Then comes the fun part... learning the theory and actually putting it into practice. Feeling the wind change. Adjusting the sails. Making mistakes. Learning. Trying again.

And it made me think - Retirement is a bit like sailing.

After decades of working in a familiar place, you're suddenly navigating a new environment. The language changes. Your routines change. The things that gave you confidence and identity may no longer be there.

You can't just step away from work and expect everything to magically fall into place. You need to learn how to navigate this new chapter.

The good news? Just like sailing, nobody is born knowing how to do it. But you can learn and try out things and make mistakes, adjust your course and try something else.

And before you know it you find yourself enjoying the journey. After all you’ve worked heard enough for it.

I’m off for my next course next month – wish me luck!

Here's an odd thought - Retirement isn't just about having fun.

What I hear you cry?!

Of course, travel, hobbies, lazy mornings, long lunches and finally having time for yourself are wonderful parts of retirement. Hence the photo!

But after working with people approaching this stage of life, I've noticed something.

The happiest retirees aren't necessarily the ones with the longest holiday lists.

They're the ones who have thought about what makes them feel useful, connected and fulfilled.

Because when work disappears, so do many things we don't always notice. We lose structure in our days, we lose our identity, we lose connection with colleagues and that sense of achievement that work gave us.

Nobody warns you that you might miss parts of your working life. But I’ve often seen people in a black hole about six months into their retirement.

Retirement gave them freedom. But freedom without direction can feel surprisingly empty.

So, the question you need to ask isn’t. "What am I going to do with all this free time?"

It's: "Who do I want to become in this next chapter?"

You need to create your retirement with your interests and passions in mind, preferably not on your last day of work.

How much thought have you given to the life you are retiring 'to', not just the work you are retiring 'from'?

"I know I needed to think about retirement... but honestly, I was just too just too busy."

I’ve heard this a few times!

For years, their life has been full of deadlines, meetings, responsibilities, targets and people needing their attention. They put themselves last on the list.

Retirement felt like something that could wait.

Until suddenly it can't. A few months before retirement they realise they haven't thought about the important questions.

Questions like:
What will my days actually look like?
Who will I be when work isn't such a big part of my identity?
What will give me purpose, connection and a reason to get up in the morning?

The funny thing is, many people spend years planning their career, their finances and their next business move...

But the biggest transition of all? They leave it until the last minute.

Retirement isn't just about stopping work. It's about creating a life you genuinely want to wake up to. And that takes a little thought. Not because you need to have every detail mapped out. But because the best chapters of life rarely happen by accident.

If retirement is on your horizon, don't wait until the calendar forces you to think about it. It is time to put yourself in the picture - start now.

If you'd like to create a retirement that's about much more than stopping work, take my free Retirement Readiness Assessment. It will help you discover how prepared you are for the life you want to live.

One of the things I love most about being semi-retired is the freedom to mix together all the things that make me feel alive.

One week I'm running a retirement retreat in Spain. The next I'm swimming in the sea at sunrise, exploring a new town, hiking in the mountains or planning our next adventure.

At the moment we're organising a road trip around Thailand. (the photo is us in Vietnam!)

It looks wonderfully spontaneous.
It isn't!

The flights, accommodation, routes, visas and transport have been in the diary for months. Some of our travel plans start six or even twelve months before we ever pack a suitcase.

It made me smile because retirement is often imagined as one long, carefree holiday where everything just falls into place.

In reality, the freedom to be spontaneous often comes from good planning.
The same is true of retirement itself.

The people I meet who enjoy retirement the most rarely "wing it." They've thought about how they want to spend their time, who they want to spend it with, and what gives them purpose.

Planning doesn't make life less exciting; a lot of fun is getting lost in Get Your Guide finding cool things to do once you’ve there! Planning gives you the freedom to enjoy it once you’re there.

I'm convinced that's one of retirement's biggest secrets.

So tell me... what's one adventure you're already dreaming about?

One of the biggest surprises on my retirement retreats came from a woman who came with her husband. She had arranged the retreat as her husband was retiring.

She wasn't due to retire for another three years.

"This isn’t so much for me ," she said on the first morning. "It’s his retirement, not mine."

By the end of the retreat, she'd completely changed her mind.

She realised retirement doesn't arrive on the day you stop working. It begins much earlier.

She could already see how her husband's retirement would change their routines, (he was planning lovely morning chats – she wanted her hour before work to meditate).
It was going to impact their relationship, conversations and plans for the future. She realised pretty quickly that it was important that her needs were part of his plans.

Instead of reacting to change, she decided to prepare for it, become part of the conversation so he didn’t plan his retirement solely around her.

If you're within a few years of retirement - or your partner is - now is the perfect time to start thinking beyond the finances.

How ready are you for retirement, really?

Here’s a retirement myth for you: "It'll all fall into place once I stop working."

It’s just not that simple and after working with lots of people approaching retirement, I've learnt that the happiest retirements rarely happen by accident.

They happen by design.

I've met people who spent years planning their finances but gave barely a thought to how they wanted to spend the next twenty or thirty years. Then retirement arrived and they totally lost.

Not because they'd made the wrong decision, but because they had not given enough thought to life beyond work.

The good news? You can rectify the situation if this is you. Retirement isn't just about leaving a job, but rather creating a life that still feels purposeful. A life full of fun, connection with people and yes, some structure (we are humans after all!)

Those things don’t magically appear on your last day at work.

Don't leave one of the biggest transitions of your life to chance. You need to prepare for the life you want, not just the career you're leaving behind.

That's when retirement becomes something to look forward to, rather than something to figure out.

And if you didn’t and find yourself feeling at a loss then no worries, it’s not to late to change course.

Wherever you stand my free Retirement Assessment will help you explore what you need to consider to get the retirement you deserve.

Moving to another country teaches you something important. You are capable of far more than you think.

When I first adapted to life in Spain, everything felt unfamiliar. The language? I didn’t speak it!

The customs, the laid back manańa of everything happening tomorrow drove me crazy, how could I plan anything?!

The little everyday things you don't even think about until they change. Where do you shop? How do you make new friends? How do you find your place when everything around you feels different?

Living between two countries has taught me that belonging isn't always about one place. It’s about creating home wherever you are.

I've learnt to embrace being a beginner again. To ask questions. To be curious. To try new things like paddle boarding. To laugh at myself when things don't go to plan, or I fall off!

And perhaps the biggest lesson? Change can be uncomfortable but that isn’t always. Bad thing. It can also open doors you never knew existed.

I see this with my retirement clients too. Retirement is a huge transition. Suddenly, the familiar routines, relationships and identity you've built over decades can change.

But just like moving countries, it can also be an opportunity to discover a new version of yourself.

You don't have to have every answer before you begin. Sometimes you just need the courage to take the first step.

And to do that you can begin to look at some of the fundamental things you’ll need to consider to create the retirement you deserve.

My free Retirement Assessment will help you explore how ready you are, not just financially, but for the life you're about to create.

In my experience retirement is too important to just ‘see what happens’

Many people I meet have said "I'll figure it out when I get there." But that’s a bit late.

Retirement isn't like a two-week holiday where you can have a vague idea of where you want to go and then just relax and decide what to do as you go.

It's a whole new chapter of life.

And after decades of having structure, purpose and a reason to get up every morning, suddenly having complete freedom can feel surprisingly challenging.
I've worked with many successful people who were financially ready for retirement.
But emotionally? They hadn't prepared one bit. And that’s a problem.

They hadn't thought about who they would be without their job title. What would give their days meaning. They hadn’t considered what they wanted their life to look like when nobody was telling them where to be or what to do.

It is not about retiring from something. You need to retire towards something. Something you have consciously designed.

It’s too big a transition to leave to chance. So, don't wait until your last day at work to start thinking about your next chapter.

Start creating it now.

If you're approaching retirement, my free Retirement Assessment will help you explore how ready you are, not just financially, but for the life you're about to create.
