Wow. What fascinating insight. A completely novel way of understanding violence and how it spreads like a contagion. Which also means it can be stopped. Fascinating interview, hugely important in the context of our polycrisis, and how division and violence is spreading. But very hopeful too.

Gary Slutkin reframes violence as a contagious disease and presents Cure Violence’s public‑health approach: interrupt transmission with trained outreach workers, shift community norms, and use data to target hotspots. These evidence‑based programs have produced substantial drops in shootings and homicides—often reported around 40–70% in evaluated sites—and rely on mediation, de‑escalation, and early intervention.
