Former mayor of Bracknell Naheed Ejaz has been sentenced to three years in prison after being found guilty of perverting the course of justice by helping her son conceal evidence linked to a serious sexual offence.
The court heard that when police arrived at her home, she delayed officers from entering and spoke to her son in Urdu, during which time he was able to hide a mobile phone believed to contain key evidence. Her son, Dewan Khan, who was convicted of ra**ng an unconscious 15 year old girl, was jailed for 12 years.
The judge said her actions created a “real risk” that the offence could have gone unprosecuted. The victim later described significant impacts on her education and mental health following the attack.
In a video recorded before sentencing and shared on social media, Naheed Ejaz denies the offences and claims that both she and her son were wrongly prosecuted, alleging it was due to political affiliation and their religion and ethnicity. A court has, however, found both guilty following a 6 day trial.
