Retirement has a way of bringing you face-to-face with the wisest mentor you’ll ever have - yourself.

Not the version defined by professional roles and responsibilities, but the 'warts and all' version that knows you inside out.

This is the part of you that already understands your values, your patterns, your strengths - and is ready to share a few insights… IF you take the time to listen.

Somewhere inside, you’ve already got the experience, the instincts, and the wisdom you need to navigate what’s ahead. When you lean into that, things begin to feel clearer. Calmer. More intentional. More in your control.

Your future self already knows the way.

So why wouldn’t you draw on its innate wisdom, focus and guidance to shape your next chapter?

I’ve written a short blog post about self-mentoring and how tuning in to “Future You” can help you make clearer choices.

Recently, I said yes to two things I’d have previously turned down: joining a choir… and a table tennis club.

Old me had plenty of “reasons” (aka excuses!):

“I’m not very good.”
“I’m too busy.”
“I’ll do it another time.”

But retirement has taught me that sometimes it’s enough to simply follow your curiosity and give things a go.

Those two small yeses have already brought more energy, more connection, and more joy to my week. Nothing dramatic - just quietly life-enhancing.

It isn’t about filling your diary- it’s about staying open, following your curiosity, and seeing what happens.

So if there’s something you’ve been mildly curious about… maybe this is your nudge.

What might you say yes to next?

Okay, so I’m a little late to the New Year party, but that doesn’t mean it’s too late to think about fresh starts and new beginnings.

Whether you’re easing into January or stepping into retirement, both are big transitions that invite you to reflect, refocus, and recalibrate.

In this blog, I explore how these moments have more in common than you might think- and how you can make the most of them, even if you’re a little behind schedule!

People often spend years planning the financial aspects of retirement, but far less time considering the social, emotional, and psychological shifts that accompany this new chapter.

Money matters - of course it does.
But so does meaning.
So does community.
So does waking up with a sense of purpose.

If you’re approaching retirement (or already in it), it’s worth asking:
Have you given as much attention to the life you want as you have to the numbers?

A richer retirement starts with both.

Are you planning to retire within the next year?

I was recently contacted by a PhD researcher, Stephanie Moffat, who’s studying how the move into retirement shapes our sense of purpose- something I know matters to many of us.

She’s looking for people who are about 6–12 months away from retirement to take part in a study at the University of Leicester. It involves a short online questionnaire (about 20 minutes) and, for a few participants, a follow-up chat later on.

If you’re a UK resident and would like to be involved (or know someone who might), you can find all the details here:

People often focus on what they’ll lose in retirement.

But it’s about so much more than endings... it's an invigorating space that comes with fresh new energy.

The energy of possibilities.

The kind that comes from knowing you have new choices, new opportunities, and a whole new chapter waiting.

So… what possibilities excite you most?

Think about the strengths, talents, and attributes you've cultivated over the years.
* How might you share your wisdom and expertise with others to impact their lives positively?
* What excites you about pushing the boundaries of your comfort zone?

Don’t worry if your retirement pieces don’t feel like they fit yet.

I share some simple ways to bring them together on the blog and explain why the ‘picture on the box’ is vital for retirement planning.

Retirement is a big deal, and it can feel like a massive step into the unknown.

Shying away from the decisions and uncertainties can feel like the easier option.

But that doesn't make it a viable retirement strategy.

When it comes to YOUR retirement, are you procrastinating and pretending it’s not really happening? Are you deferring your retirement as a way of delaying making any decisions?

If this IS you - fear not - my latest blog is just for you! I've put the link in the comments below.

And now the deeper question…

What would need to change in your life for those 3 words to feel true, not just as wishes, but as your lived experience?

It’s one thing to choose words like “freedom,” “purpose,” or “balance.” It’s another to shape a life that reflects them day to day.

So pause for a moment and ask yourself:
🌟 What’s currently getting in the way?
🌟What might need to shift... in your routine, mindset, relationships, or priorities?
🌟What’s one small change you could make to bring those words to life?

This isn’t about big, dramatic overhauls. It’s about moving forward with intention, one choice at a time, in a direction defined by YOU.

More on the blog (link below) if you’re curious about how 3 words can shape how you show up for this next chapter.

And if you’ve already got your words, care to share? You never know who you might inspire.

We’ve all heard the saying, “You’re as old as you feel” but it turns out there’s more truth to it than you might think.

Research shows that feeling younger is linked to better health, happiness, and even a longer life.

You can’t change the date on your birth certificate but how you think about ageing matters.

So, how old do YOU feel?

Lately, I keep hearing song titles that might as well be my life’s theme tune! It’s amazing how just a few words, or a catchy line can nail exactly what’s going on in your head and heart.

Here are a few tracks (to name but a few!) that feel like the soundtrack to my current journey:

🌟 Changes - David Bowie

🌟 Born to Run - Bruce Springsteen

🌟 I Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For - U2

🌟 Here Comes the Sun - The Beatles

🌟 Go Your Own Way - Fleetwood Mac

What’s on your current playlist?

If you had to pick a song (or three) that reflect where you are now, what would they be?
