Sophie Lindsay Photography I'm a fine art wedding and portrait photographer based in London. It’s who I am and an essential part of my work. My style?

As a people photographer I believe the key to creating beautiful images is simple; I take the time to get to know you. Essentially I use natural light where ever possible, with the aim to create clean, simple yet elegant images. I love my life as a photographer, partly because it never feels like work, but mainly because it allows me to tell a story, and uncover the hidden layers inside those defining moments that can shape our lives.

What I’ve come to realise this past year, somewhat later in life, is that no one is coming to give you permission.

You get to decide what matters (which is sometimes the hardest part), and you build from there.

You choose to begin, take that first step, and work it out as you go along.

At the beginning, my plan was just an idea… a thought that I could create a photography studio and a business that perfectly fitted around my life, entirely on my own terms.

Experimenting and seeing what worked.
Building boundaries and sticking to them.
Making mistakes and carrying on.

It’s not always easy, but it is always rewarding.

So if you’re wanting to do something, just remember… you don’t need permission. Just begin.

A portrait begins as an image and ends as an heirloom.

This is the part I love most.

Taking something that exists in my mind, and quietly making it real.

It never stops feeling like a privilege.

What does it meant to be creative? I often think about this. Creativity has always been my way of making sense of the world; the thread that runs through everything I do - not just in the studio, but in life. It’s my life force.

It’s the ability to take something internal - a feeling, an idea - and give it form, making it visible.

At its core, it allows me to communicate how I’m feeling, and even after being a photographer for 25 years, that still feels like a superpower.

Can you guess what’s been upcycled in this portrait?

I’m thrilled to finally share ‘Modern Heirlooms’ – my new portrait collection where nothing is ever as it seems.

Recently in the studio, I started to see beauty in the things I overlooked or threw away - packaging materials, cardboard, everyday objects. I wondered what stories they might tell if they were given centre stage?

What began as simple curiosity became something far more meaningful: a way to explore what we keep, what we discard, and how beauty can emerge when ordinary materials are approached with the same care once only reserved for paintings.

Inspired by Renaissance portraiture, each image transforms these overlooked fragments with sculptural styling and painterly light.

✨ Paper coffee filters become an ornate ruff
✨Ventilation tubing becomes a sculptural headdress
✨Polystyrene balls are pearls
✨Ring pulls are fashioned into rich jewellery
✨An old tablecloth becomes a stand-up collar ✨Headphones covered in gold drawing pins echo an Anne Boleyn–style headpiece

And yes, I made everything myself!

Modern Heirlooms is where creativity meets sustainability and imagination - a quiet reminder that beauty is everywhere, if we choose to look for it.

Did you recognise each material? I’m intrigued.. which details caught your eye?

MODERN HEIRLOOMS - coming soon.

I’ve always loved the Dutch Old masters and they are undoubtedly the main inspiration for my Children’s Fine Art portraits.

For these artists, portraits were a legacy. They wanted to show the quiet dignity of everyday life through the simplest of ways - the texture of fabric, the fall of light and shadow, and with subtle expressions.

Ordinary subjects were made extraordinary through technique, and it’s this visual restraint and emotional depth that I find mesmerising.

These portraits were designed as a legacy, and a vehicle for quiet reflection, and I’m always drawn to their understated beauty and contemplative mood.

What do you think of this era of painting.. Do you like it? Would you like a similar legacy for your children?

If you’d like to find out more, comment the word BEAUTY and I’ll send you a link to my booking system for a free Discovery Call. I’m currently taking bookings for September and I’d love to tell you about how I work and what goes into creating one of these magical portraits!

💫 Your children are a work of art 💫

That’s why, when you commission a portrait of your children or family in my studio, the main product I’m creating is a beautiful piece of framed art for your walls.

I believe that photographs only become a portrait once they’re visible - something that you can look at, touch and enjoy every single day (and not stay hidden in a hard drive and lost in the depths of time).

I have a choice of 3 styles of frames, and this one is called the Exhibition Frame. What I love about it is the mix of a traditional style of portraiture with an ultra simple, minimal design for the frame - it looks amazing if your home has clean lines and a more modern style.

Do you think this works - what do you think of having a traditional style of portraiture in an ultra modern frame? I’m intrigued - let me know! 👇

What do you think of this blue background? It’s actually one of the walls in my studio (as opposed to one of my hand painted canvas backdrops) and I think the rich blue tones really suit this style.

I’m heading off to London for a meeting at The National Theatre Costume Department to get some inspiration for my Fine Art Portraits. I can’t wait to share some outfit ideas with you!

I’ve been bowled over by all your lovely comments. Thank you so much ☺️ I’d forgotten how much fun Instagram was! It’s so great to be back again and chatting to you all.

What do you think about this blue wall as a backdrop?

📣 INTRODUCING MY NEW GENRE!! ✨💥

I’m THRILLED to finally be able to start sharing my new studio genre - and possibly my favourite to date.

These are my painterly Fine Art Portraits - children’s portraits inspired by the Dutch Seventeenth Century Old masters such as Vermeer and Rembrandt.

I’ve always wanted to create these but didn’t have the space in which to do it. My studio has opened so much creativity in me! I’ve been working really hard over the last few months slowly building up a wardrobe, sourcing the right clothes and accessories (a huge part of the success of these images has been the styling) as well as finding a wonderful hairstylist and beginning to bring my vision to life.
I have a lot more that I’ll be sharing over the coming weeks.

As you can imagine, this is ALL about the lighting. The Dutch Old Masters used a very specific type of light and recreating it has been a wonderful journey. I’ve always been fascinated by this golden era and did my dissertation on Rembrandt for my masters degree in History of Art.

My aim is to create portraits that are both timeless, stylish and beautiful.

If you’re interested in finding out more do send me a DM - I’m still building my new website so don’t have my booking page ready but do get in touch here or via email [email protected].

What do you think - do you like this style?
