Have you met Ailsa Colquhoun? 🚀

Ailsa joined Green Element 4 months ago as our Academy and Engagement Manager, and she inspires us every day with her work ethic and fantastic ideas!

🎙️ Ailsa produces our Sustainable Business Podcast which aims to inspire businesses to embark on their sustainability journey. Researching our guests is Ailsa’s favourite activity; so many have come on some incredible journeys, and she loves hearing their stories!

🎓 She also curates and builds sustainability courses for professionals via the Green Element Academy. Her favourite part about the academy is being able to create activities that are engaging for the learner, but also ‘gamifying’ the activity so our students enjoy the process from start to finish.

💭 Since starting, Ailsa has built our Sustainability Solved Community, a neutral platform for professionals interested in Sustainability. Ailsa loves reading the comments and insights from industry experts, and she has gained a lot of knowledge from the platform already!

A fun fact about Ailsa? When solo travelling around Croatia, she was snorkeling around a quiet island and saw one of Europe’s most rare fish🐟

🌏 How do we limit global emissions to 1.5C?

🎙️ While our Sustainable Business Podcast is on holiday this month, we have been working hard behind the scenes to create a very exciting podcast special.

The podcast special will act as an audio guide for businesses to limit their emissions, ensuring that we do not surpass global heating of 1.5c.

We will be chatting with experts from the finance, law, and food and beverage industry to understand what their sector is doing to tackle the climate crisis.

❌ The recent IPCC report stated that it's 'Code Red' for humanity, and drastic action needs to be taken on a global scale to avoid a climate catastrophe.

So, what is your sector doing to tackle climate change?

Hey, can you help us?

The Green Element website will soon be going under construction, with a view of making it more sustainable and environmentally friendly.

🖥️ The internet is now responsible for 1 billion tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions per year and accounts for 10% of global electricity demands.

✈️ This means that the impact that the internet is having on climate change is on par with that of the aviation industry!

So, we are looking for ideas and suggestions so that we can make a significant effort in reducing our digital footprint.

👉 What would be your top piece of advice in designing a sustainable website?
👉 Have you implemented sustainable design on your website?
👉 What has your experience been with sustainable design?

🌎 How can you make a positive impact when travelling the world?

Earlier in the week, we asked to know your thoughts on Sustainable Travel Agencies when organising a trip away⬇️

But how can we go that extra mile to make positive changes within the communities that we visit?

That’s where Greener Act comes in:

💚 Greener Act is the first-ever App that encourages individuals to make positive changes by engaging in community projects and supporting local causes.

✅ The app is completely free and makes us aware of local sustainable activities, allowing users to create a more conscientious and purposeful experience.

Let us know your tips to be more sustainable when travelling in the comments below⬇️

🔴 CODE RED FOR HUMANITY 🔴

Humankind is responsible for climate change – no more doubt about it.

The IPCC sixth assessment report has been published to coincide with COP26, "A rather bleak but inspiring statement from the world’s leading scientists", said Will Richardson.

We’ve already heated the planet to 1.1C above pre-industrial levels and we will reach 1.5C of heating in the next 20 years.

So, how can you help?

🌿 WRITE TO YOUR MP calling for an actionable decarbonisation plan to be delivered before COP26.
🌿 SUPPORT CAMPAIGNS AGAINST new coal mines in the UK, new gas fields in Scotland, new roads and new runways at UK airports, and government tax concessions for the fossil fuel industry.
🌿 SUPPORT CAMPAIGNS TO INCREASE subsidies and support of renewables, electrical vehicles, and hydrogen transport infrastructure.

What can your business do?

🌿SET YOUR COMPANY'S SCIENCE-BASED TARGETS; draw up your own carbon reduction strategy to slash emissions and eliminate climate risk from your business.
🌿 MEASURE YOUR CARBON FOOTPRINT, understand where your biggest environmental impacts are coming from, and take steps to begin reducing your footprint.
🌿 EDUCATE all staff on climate change and strive towards an eco-friendly work environment.

✈️ During the pandemic, so much has been accomplished in terms of carbon footprint reduction primarily due to restricted travel.

However, as restrictions ease the idea of traveling is on everyone’s mind!

🌏 You can make huge changes to your environmental, social, and economic impact by considering the ways in which you travel, engage with the local community, and spend your money whilst away from home.

💚 Booking your next holiday through a Sustainable Travel Agency may help you decide on a more eco-friendly trip and help you to further understand where the largest environmental impacts arise when going on holiday.
