To***co and ci******es worth around £5m to HMRC seized in Newry

Investigations into the suspected fraud are ongoing
LOOSE to***co and ci******es worth around £5 million in lost duty and taxes have been seized in the Newry area.

HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) officers, accompanied by the PSNI, confiscated an estimated ten tonnes of loose to***co, and 411,000 ci******es during the search of commercial premises on Thursday.

Steve Tracey, HMRC fraud investigations director, said it was a suspected illicit to***co factory.

Cigarette processing equipment, filters, and packaging were also found on the premises. Investigations into the suspected fraud are ongoing.

"The trade in illicit to***co is unregulated and makes cheaper to***co more readily available to the young and vulnerable," he said.

"The sale of illegal to***co will not be tolerated by us or our partner agencies.

"Disrupting criminal trade is at the heart of our strategy to clampdown on the illicit to***co market, which costs the UK around £2.5 billion a year. This is theft from the taxpayer and undermines legitimate traders.

"We encourage anyone with information about the illegal sale of to***co to report it online or call the Fraud Hotline on 0800 788 887."

Listening to the radio this morning while preparing the kids brekkie.
Apparently Organised Crime is now a bigger threat than Terrorism, (didn’t mention the proven links).
Wakey, wakey commerce!
Putting the price of your commodity up to offset the cost of counterfeiting does nothing but add to the criminal coffers. Shareholders and analysts will applaud you for spending some of your profit to make an impact against the billions the criminals are making, consumers will be happy to know there is integrity in the product they are buying and society will be a better place.

So, if counterfeiting is such big business, (which it is), and funds organised crime and proscribed organisations, ( which it does) and corporates tell their shareholders and the analysts they have robust systems to deal with it, how come it is so difficult to get them interested in accurate intelligence about sources of production?
