This may be the coolest I will ever look so please can we take a moment. Double denim ft sea carved basalt complete with huge vesicles from gasses escaping the lava, vein infills and nice weathering going on. 🌋

Been a great holiday looking at volcanics but looking forward to being back to sedimentary rocks, which are very much my comfort zone 😅

No filters/edits, it's truly that gorgeous. Have been really enjoying trying to film fish on my DJI action cam... Emphasis on try. Filming stationary rocks is far easier. Maybe a short reel to come when I can get them on screen for more than 3 seconds 🤣🤣🤣

A walk in a strange landscape today of black lava rocks, no shade, extinct volcanoes on the skyline and red succulents (Mesembryanthemum nodiflorum, if you're interested!).

A truly fascinating place in ways I didn't expect... And that red plant in amongst the black rocks is strange yet beautiful.

This is the north shore of Fuerteventura and the volcanic history is pretty incredible! More to follow for sure!

Meet Titanites Giganteus, aka one of Britain’s most iconic giant ammonites and in the walls of buildings on the Isle of Portland they are EVERYWHERE. This spiral-shelled guy swam around in Jurassic seas around 150 million years ago, and as you can see with a me/hand for scale, they got huge. Though tbh the name gives that away too I think.

They’re found in Portland Stone and quarrymen used to take them and use them in walls, so you see these dotted about, but they're a lot harder to come across new ones these days. That said, I think they're kind of epic in buildings... Really adds to the ambience of the area!

Nice day out fossil hunting today - didn't bring back anything other than this ammonite today which I thought looked really cool. Not a soul on the beach today, was gorgeous 😍 All rounded off with a "Hot Cross Bun" ice cream. Yes you read that right. Amazing but bizarre 🤣

The Harland Quay area is an absolute textbook area for Chevron folds. They really have to be seen to be believed because the scale is epic. This is a re-edit and re-upload of a post I put up a couple of years ago (aka shaved 8 seconds of waffle out!).
Dreaming of being able to wear shorts and t-shirts down the beach again soon.... 🥹

I've recently heard that the OCR A level course is closing in the UK. This has been in my drafts for a while and feels incredibly apt to post given that fact. It's incredibly disappointing to hear when people just think geologist is studying rocks... Put simply, in order to live on our Earth, we have to work with it and if you don't have people who understand that Earth, you can very quickly end up with danger or just a lack of resources!! Yes, understanding our Earth's history is incredibly interesting and pulling apart the stories of rocks endlessly enchants me however, there is so much more to the story than just this... How lucky geologists are to study a field that both can strike awe, but also has fully practical uses spanning so many fields it's hard to list them.

I studied on the OCR geology course myself and I would not have taken geology as a science if I had not taken a chance on it at A level. How many other people now won't get that chance? 🥹😭

Also shout out to that last picture - that was in Morocco and I didn't expect there to be SNOW I packed solely for sand. Wore so so many thin layers but still froze my little bottom off looking at rocks that day.... 🤣🤣
