Think induction means rewiring? Not always.

Some induction hobs are designed to run from a standard 13amp plug, making induction a possible upgrade in kitchens where installing a dedicated high-power circuit isn’t practical.

You still get fast heating, easy cleaning and precise temperature control — although plug-in models may limit the total power available when several zones are used together.

The hob, existing electrics and kitchen setup all need to be checked before installation, but it could be a much simpler switch than you imagined.

Bigger isn’t always better when it comes to choosing a fridge.

The litre capacity is useful, but it doesn’t tell you how well that space will work for you. Before buying, consider:

• How much fresh food you usually keep
• Whether you need more fridge or freezer space
• If the shelves can be adjusted
• Whether your usual bottles, cartons and containers will fit
• How much room drawers and doors need to open properly

A well-designed fridge that suits your shopping habits can be far more useful than a larger model filled with awkward or wasted space.

Choosing a tumble dryer for a smaller home? Start with the space, not the brand.

Measure the full area carefully, including the depth needed for the door, plug and ventilation. Then consider:

• A heat pump dryer uses less energy but may cost more upfront
• A condenser dryer offers flexible positioning but needs its water container emptied
• A vented dryer requires access to an external vent
• A washer dryer saves the most space, although its drying capacity is usually smaller than its washing capacity

Choose a drum size that suits your household too. Buying a bigger machine than you need takes up valuable space and may cost more to run.
