Most AI-written copy reads like a brochure that won an award. Long words, no warmth, phrases no human says out loud.

The fix is one instruction. Before you ask for anything, tell it:

“Write the way I would explain this to a smart friend who is not in my industry. Short sentences, plain English, no marketing language, no buzzwords.”

Then paste in an example of your own writing so it copies your rhythm.

You will still need to edit. AI is a fast first draft, not a replacement for your voice. But this one line saves you from sounding like everyone else.

Spent a lovely day at Wild Magic back in July, supporting a brilliant charity and getting out into the countryside.

They have an incredible 80 acres of land with some really exciting plans for the future, including rewilding, education, camping and even festivals.

It was great to get a glimpse of what's being created there, and I'm really looking forward to seeing how the project develops.

Sometimes it's good to step away from the laptop and spend a day somewhere completely different.

If you're BACP registered, there's a date worth pencilling in: midday on 3 November 2026.

That's when the new Ethical Framework becomes mandatory, and it covers AI for the first time. Whether you use AI for session notes, admin, marketing, or not at all, there's a small amount of prep worth doing.

I've written a plain-English guide to what it actually says: whether you can put client information into ChatGPT, what to tell clients, and a six-step sequence to work through before the deadline.

I'm a marketing consultant rather than the BACP, so it's a practical starting point rather than official guidance, and it links to the full framework throughout.

Hope it's useful.

Not everyone loves writing blogs. But if you want to grow your business, they can make a big difference to your SEO.

Once your practice is established, creating useful content around the questions your clients are actually asking can help you get found by more of the right people.

I learnt this myself during COVID, when I wrote around 60 guides covering everything from web design and marketing to SEO and blogging.

It completely changed how visible my business was online, and helped turn a small home business into something that attracted new clients, speaking opportunities and events.

But you don't need to write 60 blogs overnight. Start small. Even one useful, well-written article every few months can help demonstrate your expertise and give Google more useful content to understand.

Then build from there. Consistency beats trying to do everything at once.

Can you guess where in London this is?

I came across this bombed-out church at the weekend and was reminded how much history is tucked away in the middle of the city.

With all the skyscrapers, towers and new developments, I love that London still manages to hold on to little pieces of its past right in the heart of the city.

Do you know where this is? Let me know in the comments.

Your website doesn't need to be complicated to be effective.

If you're just getting started, a simple 4 - 5 page website can be more than enough.

The important thing is making sure it actually tells people who you are, what you do and why they should work with you.

Have separate pages for your key services, include good-quality photos and, where appropriate, a video that lets people get a feel for you.

And don't rely on generic AI-generated copy.

Your website should sound like you. Your experience, your personality and the things that make you different are what will build trust with potential clients.

If you've got 20 years of experience, make that a cornerstone of your website. Don't hide it behind bland copy that could belong to anyone.

Simple doesn't mean generic. It means focused.

As a member of The Business Beanstalk, I’m proud that we support The Mulberry Centre (), a fantastic local charity providing free support and wellbeing services to people affected by cancer, as well as their families and loved ones.

They’re holding their annual Gala this September, and tickets are now on sale.

It’s a great opportunity to enjoy an evening out while supporting a charity doing genuinely important work in our local community.

If you’re local to West London and looking for something to support this September, I’d really recommend taking a look
at the Gala and finding out more about The Mulberry Centre.

More details and tickets are available via their website.

While I’m usually your go-to guy for all things websites and SEO, I’m here to tell you that sometimes the most important thing you can do at your laptop is look up from it.

Especially in summer.

I’ve been making the most of the warmer (sometimes far too warm) days and longer evenings with a few trips out of the city.

Running a business can make it very easy to spend all day staring at a screen, so I’m trying to make the most of the summer while it lasts.

Sometimes the best thing for productivity is stepping away from the laptop altogether.
