Using my OBM skills to move house!!!
In February we are packing it all up and moving 300 miles away.
Moving house with a family of five, especially with pets in tow, can feel like a mammoth task, but with some planning and organisation, it can be managed smoothly.
How similar is this to my role as OBM?
✔️Plan Early and Make a Checklist
Start planning well in advance. Create a checklist of everything that needs to be done. Assign tasks to family members based on their ages and abilities.
✨️For an OBM this would be an initial meeting with the client first about their needs and vision. Ensuring the right people are in place for the client to succeed. This could also mean producing a 90 day launch plan.
✔️Declutter Ruthlessly and Packing Efficiency
Before packing, go through each room and decide what to keep, donate, sell, or throw away.
Begin by packing items you won’t need until after the move.
✨️For an OBM this could be an initial audit of the business. Streamlining systems, creating SOPs and targets.
✔️Managing the Pets
Moving can be stressful for animals, so it’s essential to keep them calm and safe:
Pre-Move Prep: Introduce pets to their carriers or crates before moving day to help them feel comfortable.
✨️As an OBM we ensure that virtual staff are looked after and involved. When joining a business as an OBM, scheduling an introductory video call to meet with staff to learn about their role. Also scheduling ongoing weekly check-ins.
✔️Keeping Kids Involved
Children can find moving unsettling, so involve them in age-appropriate tasks to help them feel included.
✨️Again as an OBM this is a key to continued support and staff wellbeing. Setting clear parameters, but also assistance where needed. listen to staff, praise, thank and encourage.
✔️Hiring Help
If your budget allows, consider hiring professional movers who can handle the heavy lifting and even help with packing. This frees up your time to focus on the children and pets.
✨️Employing the right people for the right jobs. As OBM this means utilising the skills already in place and hiring the right person if there is a need and sticking to the budget available.
✔️Settling In
Once you’ve moved, focus on making the new house feel like home. Set up the children’s rooms first to give them a sense of stability. Introduce pets to one room at a time to prevent them from feeling overwhelmed. Gradually unpack and tackle one area at a time.
✨️For an OBM this is making sure there are follow ups, emails and customer engagements being made by the correct staff. Also, chat to your client about the metrics results. Weekly online meetings with the team.
🏠 While moving with a family of five and pets can be challenging, careful preparation and teamwork can turn it into an exciting new chapter for everyone.
