Since 2008 Fulcrum Maritime Systems Ltd has been an approved supplier of LRIT systems. Today Fulcrum Maritime is approved as an LRIT Testing ASP by over 60 Flag States and provides Vessel Tracking Data Centres for 13 Flags States. In addition to Long Range Identification and Tracking, Fulcrum provide vessel tracking services for fishing and other vessels which the Flag has an obligation or interest to monitor. Fulcrum specialise in integrating different tracking solutions into a single Vessel Monitoring Centre to enable the Flag Administration to operate with maximum efficiency and minimum cost overheads. Fulcrum have a commercial tracking system that is available to vessel owners and operators, that enables vessels to be tracked globally and provides key functionality such as historical position reporting, immediate position, alerting and delivery of position reports by email. As well as tracking systems, Fulcrum have a number of other packages designed to facilitate aspects of managing a ship registry, such as the Bespoke Online Seafarer System, which manages the process of receiving applications for seafarer documentation and issuing endorsements and certificates. As with all our solutions, there is a degree of flexibility built in to the system to enable our customer to adapt the system to suit their own business model.

Today, meet Charlotte Lewis, who oversees our LRIT team at CLS UK, supporting customers, flag administrations and partners worldwide.

🛰️ Charlotte, can you tell us about your role at CLS UK and what a typical day looks like?

My role is to oversee our team and ensure we provide the highest level of service to our customers, flag administrations and partners worldwide.

No two days are the same. I might be helping a customer resolve a vessel reporting issue, supporting a flag administration, reviewing regulatory changes or working with my team on LRIT conformance testing. Keeping vessels reporting successfully to our Data Centre and providing the best possible service is at the heart of what we do.

🚢 Why is LRIT testing so important?

The LRIT (Long-Range Identification and Tracking) system was introduced by the International Maritime Organization (IMO) following the September 11 attacks, as the international community sought to strengthen and prevent similar threats targeting ports. LRIT is therefore, first and foremost, an international maritime security system.

LRIT testing is far more than a regulatory requirement. It confirms that a vessel can successfully communicate with the global LRIT system and reliably transmit its position to the correct Data Centre, helping authorities access accurate tracking information when it matters most.

For customers, a test may appear straightforward, but a lot happens behind the scenes to ensure every Conformance Test is completed successfully.

🌍 What do you enjoy most about working in LRIT?

What I enjoy most is the people. LRIT gives me the opportunity to work with customers, flag administrations and partners around the world. It is incredibly rewarding to solve problems, support maritime safety and deliver an excellent service every day.

What inspires me most is being part of CLS’s mission to protect our planet through innovative space-based solutions. Through LRIT, we help improve and security while supporting customers and partners worldwide.

🎯 How the UK Set the Benchmark for Small-Scale Fisheries Monitoring

Modernising the monitoring of thousands of small-scale fishing vessels is a complex challenge. It requires technology adapted to artisanal fleets, operational support in the field and close collaboration with fisheries authorities.

🐟 Today, more than 1,200 NEMO devices support England's national I-VMS programme for vessels under 12 metres. From quayside to offshore.

🌬️ Before environmental data can support critical offshore engineering decisions, every observation system must be rigorously integrated, tested and validated.

This week, the CLS teams were on the quayside in Sète, France, carrying out the final validation of two DeepCLiDAR buoys before their imminent deployment for an offshore wind resource assessment campaign.

⚙️ Preparing a DeepCLiDAR for offshore deployment involves much more than transporting a buoy to sea. Before mobilisation, the teams carry out the final integration, configuration and validation of the system to ensure it is ready for long-term autonomous operation in demanding offshore environments.
