What do Crown Commercial Services do?

They are the Government body responsible for managing the procurement of common goods and services, increasing savings for the taxpayer by centralising buying requirements. They enable organisations to deliver improved value for money in their commercial activities and provide professional support when it matters. They break down their operations into framework agreements, which are a set of pre-tendered selection of suppliers from which public sector companies can purchase goods and services from.

The Levelling Up Paper also highlights the need for more regional spending. This means that bids are likely to be more small business-friendly so that it gives more people a chance within the area of the contract.

You’re likely to see an increase in councils wanting to hire contractors within their local area and could also potentially see more tenders being released because of this. If you’re trying to branch out to a new region, this may prove more difficult than it has been previously, however, if you’re trying to establish yourself in your local area, this may make it easier for you!

09/03/2022

The Levelling Up Whitepaper is also focusing on raising the living standard, which has commercial implications. This will need to be factored into your business costs and may mean you need to up your prices to cover that extra cost.

Does your company already pay its employees the National Living Wage? If so, you won’t need to worry too much about this part of the white paper.

If you don’t, you may need to take this into consideration as it will impact the pricing within your bids. Even though it will cost your business a little bit more, it’ll help with the social value part of your bid, which could be the make-or-break decision for you winning the contract!

Equally, this may cause tension for a client who doesn’t want to pay more for a service; meaning that having a robust understanding of your costs, so that you can strike the right balance, is important. You also want to make good bid decisions by choosing those with a higher quality evaluation rather than price to help manage this risk.

This week we are talking about levelling up in every sense of the word. On International Women's Day, as a woman-owned and led business, these words have never seemed more apt. Breaking the Bias and ensuring equality of opportunity for women is paramount, with our team, which is 89% women, hopefully demonstrating that this can be done.

Today, as per Emma Watson, we want to help Break the Bias: '“We want to empower women to do exactly what they want, to be true to themselves, to have the opportunities to develop. Women should feel free. There is no typical feminist, there is nothing anywhere that says you have to meet a certain set of criteria.”

We want to see a future where women define the world that is right for them, without judgment, without bias. Here is to all of us doing our part.

We’re sure you’ve heard about the Levelling Up Whitepaper by now, but do you know what it means for procurement?

One of the main points that will change is that social value is going to become a bigger feature within bids; this is mainly what the paper is focused on, be this local investment, training, or upskilling. However, this doesn’t mean it’ll be all about how environmentally friendly your company is, but it will also be about how you give back to your local community (or the community of the area the contract is in). This could include anything from creating job opportunities in the area to increasing local economic spend and opportunities for sub-contractors. You may find that these are already part of social value questions, but with the publishing of this whitepaper, you’re likely to see the weighting increase.

If you’d like to find out more about social value, you can read our blog post about it here: https://bit.ly/35pD3Cb
