🌍 Funding Opportunity — BFI UK Global Screen Fund: International Co-Production Strand

Calling all UK independent producers! The BFI’s UK Global Screen Fund – International Co-Production Strand is set to reopen in September 2025, offering non-recoupable grants of up to £300,000 to support UK producers involved in international co-productions.

Key Support Areas:
1. Feature films (all genres, any language) where the UK producer is a minority co-producer.
2. Television animation or documentary collaborations (any language), including both majority and minority UK co-productions, with broadcasters from at least two (minority) or three (majority) countries.

Grant Requirements:
Projects must have strong export potential and be able to generate return for the UK producer.
At least 60% of total financing secured (or 80% for Fast Track applications), not including the grant or UK tax relief.
Must include at least one additional funding source confirmed beyond the grant and tax relief.

Why This Matters:

It empowers UK producers to scale internationally as creative minority partners.
Proven impact: the strand has already funded 57 co-productions across 34 territories, with recent projects spanning feature films, animation, documentaries, and new first-time partnerships including Brazil.

From 2026 to 2029, the Fund will receive £18M annually—a significant boost from its current £7M yearly budget—under the Creative Industries Screen Growth Package.

Calling all UK screen organisations: the BFI Creative Challenge Fund is open on a rolling basis until March 2026, offering £12,000 to £150,000 per development programme across the UK.

What’s Funded:
Design and deliver creative “labs” or workshops—short or long term, in-person or virtual—to nurture emerging filmmakers, producers, writers, and immersive storytellers.

Tailored formats may include script read-throughs, scene shoots, peer guidance, finance and packaging workshops, mentoring, career planning, and strong outreach components.

Key Challenges to Address
1. Genre Diversity: Only around 50% of feature development applications are dramas. The Fund encourages labs that cultivate non-dramatic genres—thrillers, sci-fi, horror, documentary, animation, immersive—and bring fresh genre voices to independent UK cinema.
2. Early-Career Producers: Producer development remains under-supported. The Fund supports programmes that invest in early-career producers—helping them build robust business strategies and viable projects.
3. Independent Producers with Ambitious Scale: In light of the new Independent Film Tax Credit (IFTC), the Fund invites programmes that empower indie producers aiming at larger-scale, high-impact projects.
