Tony O’Sullivan, CEO of RETN, will be speaking at nog.fi (Network Operators’ Group Finland) in Tampere.

nog.fi brings together engineers and network operators to discuss the realities of running global internet infrastructure.

Tony’s talk, “Hardwired for Chaos: Building Global Infrastructure that Lasts”, looks at what it takes to build resilient networks in a world of growing disruption - from major outages to geopolitical and environmental challenges.

Looking forward to joining the Finnish interconnection and peering community and sharing RETN’s perspective on keeping networks running when it matters most.

Recent reporting in The Independent highlights the continued concentration of global internet traffic through a small number of strategic subsea corridors, including the Strait of Hormuz and wider Middle East routes.

As RETN CEO Tony O’Sullivan noted in the piece, this concentration underscores a simple reality: global connectivity depends not just on capacity, but on the geographic, geopolitical, and infrastructural diversity of the networks behind it.

At UKOS 2026 - one of Ukraine’s leading telecom and internet operator conferences - Olena Lutsenko, Business Development Director at RETN will discuss how demand for connectivity is evolving across Ukraine and Europe.

The session will explore:

• How the operational environment for telecom operators has changed in recent years, including geopolitics, infrastructure security, and new requirements for network resilience
• AI as a key driver of the next decade - how artificial intelligence is reshaping traffic patterns, increasing demand for latency and capacity, and redefining the role of telecom operators
• How Europe’s focus on resilience is accelerating diversification, new optical routes, and trans-European connectivity corridors
• Where the market is heading next - emerging opportunities for operators, key risks to consider, and what to expect over the next 5–10 years

Three days in Sofia with 17 colleagues for our second Product Workshop for Sales. After that Frankfurt, then London our next stop in a series that will also take us to Hong Kong.

We call them Product Workshops for Sales, but they're really a two-way conversation. Our sales teams bring decades of experience from very different markets, customer segments, and competitive environments. Bringing that knowledge together with Product helps us better understand where our strengths resonate, where challenges exist, and what we should build next.

The room brought together sales teams from across Eastern Europe - the Nordics and Baltics, Poland, Hungary, Romania, Bulgaria, Ukraine, and Turkey - alongside colleagues from procurement, implementation, and marketing. A wide group, and deliberately so.

What struck us most wasn't the agenda. It was what came off-script. “The debates around IP Transit pricing pressure, the candid market feedback on where our product strengths land differently depending on the country, the ideas that emerged organically from the discussions around Cloud Connect and Flex IX. The realisation that even neighbouring markets can operate by completely different commercial rules. We don't all face the same competitive landscape. We don't all sell the same way. And that's not a weakness - it's an enormous amount of collective intelligence sitting inside this company that we haven't fully tapped yet,” commented, William Manzione, Product Manager.

Frankfurt and London brought predominantly Western European perspectives. Sofia added an Eastern European dimension entirely, and the contrast between the two has already shaped how we think about what we need to build next for our teams.

Hong Kong, you're next.

: Meet Esra Vural, Country Sales Director for Turkey.

When we talk about “local expertise” at RETN, we’re often talking about people like Esra. A true Istanbulite, she was born and raised in the heart of the city, only leaving to study in Italy through the Erasmus programme. Today, she’s a 15-year veteran of the Turkish telecoms sector in what she describes as a “traditionally male-dominated market”, where relationships and trust are the only real currency.

Esra didn’t start in telecoms. With a background in Political Science and International Relations, she began her career at Shell before moving into the industry - spending nearly a decade in wholesale roles with major local and international operators.

Since joining RETN last August, she’s taken on the role of Country Sales Director, balancing strategy with the hands-on growth of RETN’s presence in Turkey.

Over the years, Esra has built a network of more than 250 industry contacts who know her by name. "In Turkey, business isn’t done through red tape - it’s done through WhatsApp, quick calls, and direct solutions. Turkish people like to talk with Turkish people,” she says, emphasising the need to be accessible at any time, whether for a quotation or to resolve a technical issue.

Outside of work, Esra brings the same intensity to her personal life. She’s spent the past two years training in kickboxing, even travelling to Thailand to watch world-class fighters in action - which she took up during a period of major personal change. Today, it’s a key source of motivation and strength as a single mother of two.

She’s also visited more than 40 countries, is a passionate singer (saving her best for RETN karaoke nights), and a devoted Galatasaray fan.

For Esra, joining RETN meant leaving behind the crowded offices of incumbents for something more agile. She’s driven by educating the market on RETN’s IP quality and expanding our footprint across key cities.

“I like being a salesperson because I enjoy communication and solving problems,” she says. In a market built on personal connection, she’s ensuring “RETN is seen not just as a provider, but as a trusted, on-the-ground partner in Turkey.”

How much expertise can you fit into one city, one venue, one photo? At RIPE92 in Edinburgh, the answer is: a lot.

Engineers, operators, and network builders from across the global Internet community are all in one place, sharing operational experience and tackling the issues that actually keep the Internet running - routing security, IPv6, resilience, policy, and the day-to-day realities of operating at scale.
