Each week fresh content produced by our specialists, photographers and digital media team will celebrate the achievements of people like Lieutenant Commander W.E. Fletcher. As the captain of HMS Haslemere, in January 1941 he dived into the Thames in an attempt to rescue the famous aviator Amy Johnson. Sadly, not only did Johnson not survive, but Fletcher’s heroism cost him his own life too, earning him an Albert Medal, which came to auction at Noonans in March this year.
We also look at the stories behind rare ancient and more modern coins, detectorist finds, historical medals and historic banknotes.
