The extremely rare Sandhurst King’s Medal will be included in next week’s sale of Coins & Historical medals on Tuesday & Wednesday, June 9-10. It is estimated to fetch £6,000-8,000 [lot 1156].

The gold King’s Medal is awarded to the Officer Cadet who gains the highest scores in military, practical and academic studies at Royal Military College, Sandhurst.

This example dates from 1904 and presented to Lt. John Basil Whitmore Hay (1887-1963) who was a junior officer in the 36th Sikhs, Indian Army. As part of his service, Hay took part in the 1911 Delhi Durbar to celebrate the coronation of George V and Queen Mary. Earlier that year, Hay had also taken part in the Coronation in London, representing some 700 officers and soldiers from the Indian contingent. A post-service career in the Diplomatic Corps saw him spend the remainder of his working life in British East Africa, where he eventually retired with his family before succumbing to ill health on the 7th November 1963, aged 76.

Amazing tales emerge from Noonans’ catalogues all the time – now we are sharing many of them in short videos on our dedicated Noonans Mayfair YouTube account

Each week fresh content produced by our specialists, photographers and digital media team will celebrate the achievements of people like Lieutenant Commander W.E. Fletcher. As the captain of HMS Haslemere, in January 1941 he dived into the Thames in an attempt to rescue the famous aviator Amy Johnson. Sadly, not only did Johnson not survive, but Fletcher’s heroism cost him his own life too, earning him an Albert Medal, which came to auction at Noonans in March this year.

We also look at the stories behind rare ancient and more modern coins, detectorist finds, historical medals and historic banknotes.

Jewellery collections belonging to women of noted character and achievements also feature, while you can also expect to learn more about the wonderful luxury watches we have to offer and the craftsmanship behind them.

Whether you are a dedicated collector, thinking of bidding on a lot or consigning something yourself – or even if you are simply interested in fascinating stories from the past – why not follow our progress? It is free and easy to subscribe. We include stories on new items coming up for auction as they come to light along with their fascinating tales, as well as pieces that have passed on to new owners.
