There is a solar eclipse today. And I can’t help but smile at the timing.
I’ve been sitting with an inquiry about obscuration.
About the possibility that so much of what we call transformation isn’t actually about becoming someone new.
Perhaps it’s about seeing more clearly what was there all along.
During an eclipse, the Sun doesn’t disappear.
The light hasn’t gone anywhere.
Something has simply moved into the line of sight.
And for a while, what was always there becomes obscured.
I wonder if we’re sometimes experiencing something similar.
A thought.
A belief.
A story about who we are.
An expectation of who we should be.
Something we’ve learned to protect.
Something we’ve decided is missing.
And because it’s in our line of sight, we mistake the obscuration for reality.
We try to fix ourselves.
Improve ourselves.
Find ourselves.
Become ourselves.
But what if the light never left?
What if who we are beneath all that thinking hasn’t been damaged, diminished or lost?
Perhaps transformation isn’t always about creating something new.
Perhaps sometimes…
the line of sight simply becomes clear.
And we remember what was there all along.
