Before modern romantic comedies took over, there was Urusei Yatsura - created by legendary manga artist Rumiko Takahashi, who also brought us Inuyasha and Ranma ½. The story first debuted as a manga in 1978 and quickly became a cultural phenomenon.

The plot begins when the unluckiest boy alive, Ataru Moroboshi, is chosen to defend Earth in a game of tag against alien princess Lum. He wins by accident… and unintentionally proposes in the process. From that moment on, his life becomes a whirlwind of alien invasions and non-stop chaos - all wrapped around a surprisingly heartfelt romantic core.

Urusei Yatsura introduced one of anime’s most recognisable heroines in Lum, complete with her tiger-striped bikini and electric personality. The series played a major role in shaping romantic comedy anime and influencing character archetypes that remain popular to this day.

There is something so quiet about this scene. The pink blossoms frame the curves of the Kintai Bridge beautifully, adding warmth to the cool tones of the soft evening sky. A lone boat passes under the arches, barely disturbing the reflection.

Hasui Kawase is a master of creating a calm atmosphere in his works - not emptiness, but a thoughtful stillness. A moment where light softens edges and sound feels distant.

This is lot 171 from our upcoming auction - 21st February at 1 pm GMT.

Rain and ritual come together in ‘Ama-koi Komachi – Ono no Komachi Asking for Rain’ (1895) by Shodo Yasuda. The legendary poet Ono no Komachi stands at the centre of this triptych, sheltered beneath a warm-toned parasol as rain cuts sharply across the scene. The surrounding figures and windswept landscape add a sense of urgency, stretching the moment across all three panels.

Published by Yazawa Hisakichi during the Meiji period, the print blends a classical literary subject with a strong sense of atmosphere and movement. Yasuda’s use of rain and diagonal light draws the eye through the composition, turning a simple act of prayer into a visually compelling narrative.

This work is inspired by a legend where the 9th-century poetess ends a severe drought by writing a poem which creates a strong spiritual resonance that triggers a heavy downpour.

This is Lot 77 in our upcoming online auction, closing 21st February.

Our upcoming Art and Antiques auction is now live! The auction will take place on Saturday, 21st February 2026 - only a couple of days after the Lunar New Year.

This year, we celebrate the Year of the Horse, one of the 12 zodiac signs known in Japan as the Jûnishi (十二支). Horses held cultural and practical significance in Japanese society, and were frequently depicted in art across all social classes.

In this woodblock print (lot 300 in the auction), the renowned ukiyo-e master Hiroshige captures the Kogane Plain in Shimosa Province, featuring Mount Fuji in the background and horses grazing peacefully in the foreground. This piece is part of his celebrated series Thirty-six Views of Mt. Fuji, released in the late Edo period, showcasing various landscapes of Japan with its most iconic mountain in the background.

Own a piece of animation history: Original Studio Ghibli production cels from our Boxing Day auction.

Cel animation, or hand-drawn animation, represents a pinnacle of artistic craftsmanship in film production. Each Studio Ghibli cel featured in this auction is an original artwork used in the creation of Hayao Miyazaki’s most iconic films, such as Princess Mononoke, Porco Rosso, Laputa Castle in the Sky, and Kiki’s Delivery Service.

What Are Animation Cels?

Production cels are transparent celluloid sheets painted with character images and details. Animators used these individual frames to create the fluid motion we see on screen. Each cel in a production represents hours of artistic labour and is, in essence, the original artwork of the animation.

Example Lots in Our Auction:

▪ Lot 17: Laputa Castle In The Sky
An original cel from this 1986 masterpiece, which revolutionised anime cinematography and visual storytelling.

▪ Lot 26: Madame Gina, Porco Rosso
A character cel from the 1992 film, celebrated for its sophisticated animation style and European aesthetic.

▪ Lot 36: Kiki’s Delivery Service
An original animation cel from Miyazaki’s 1989 coming-of-age classic. The iconic image of Kiki flying on her broomstick features an original matching watercolour background.

▪ Lot 37: Porco Rosso
A production cel portraying Porco in a car in the middle of an action sequence.

▪ Lot 38: Shishigami, Princess Mononoke
An original cel from Studio Ghibli’s last work featuring cel animation. The Shishigami appears for a short time and is one of the rarest Ghibli cels.

In ‘Heroes of the Grand Pacification’, Utagawa Kuniyoshi elevates samurai legend into masterful woodblock portraiture. This powerful series, created around 1848–49, captures famous warriors from Japan’s civil wars - each depicted in bold posture, rich detail, and unwavering resolve.

This series is more than visual drama - it's a narrative tapestry. Kuniyoshi includes rich biographical texts in each print, recounting the deeds and destinies of these warriors.

In Circle Phase: Zen Sky, Takashi Murakami channels serenity and cosmic harmony into a hypnotic square format. Signed by the artist and published by Kaikai Kiki Co., Ltd., this piece bridges Murakami’s trademark aesthetic with a deeply meditative energy.

The composition centres on the Enso circle - a symbol of enlightenment and infinity in Zen Buddhism, but is layered with Murakami’s playful universe of petals, skulls, and colour gradients.

If you like vibrant minimalism and spiritual symbolism, lot 10 from our upcoming auction is a perfect example of how Murakami transforms complexity into calm.
