Institution of Civil Engineers

Institution of Civil Engineers The Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE) is a registered charity that strives to promote and progress civil engineering. www.ice.org.uk

We believe that civil engineers are 'at the heart of society, delivering sustainable development through knowledge, skills and professional expertise.'

With this in mind, we are a qualifying body, a centre for the exchange of specialist knowledge, and a provider of resources to encourage innovation and excellence in the profession worldwide. ICE was founded in 1818 by a small group of idealistic

young men. We were granted a royal charter in 1828 where we declared that our aim was to 'foster and promote the art and science of civil engineering'. That is still our aim today. Now the number of members has grown, and the ICE represents 90,000 members worldwide.

10 years, £725bn of investment, and a very expensive question.

Does the UK have what it takes to deliver the government’s infrastructure strategy?

Great engineering has always inspired big ideas - and strong opinions.

From railways to bridges, the 19th century was full of ambitious projects, and the personalities to match.

From record-breaking heatwaves to relentless rain, climate change is rewriting the rules.

As these events become more frequent, the risk of flooding increases.

So engineers are turning to nature for help - with sustainable drainage systems.

How do they work? Click the link in the comments to find out👇

There's a miracle in Mexico that's more believable than England winning the FIFA World Cup this summer.

Mexico City’s skyline includes an iconic skyscraper, which was the first one to be built in an area highly prone to earthquakes.

But what makes the building miraculous is that - thanks to some engineering genius - it’s technically floating.

A professional qualification can give you more confidence in the decisions you make.

That's certainly been the case for Lucy Pullin, our 2026 Jean Venables Medal winner.

Since becoming an Engineering Technician, she's taken on greater responsibility at work and tackled the more challenging aspects of projects.

Today, the government has “reset” HS2 and published a report that echoes the ICE's own findings about major projects.

Sam Gould, director of policy and external affairs said that the announcement “should mark a turning point for the project.”

But what lessons do we need to take forwards?

"There's a place for you here, at the ICE," says David Porter, ICE President.

Throughout his presidential year, he's been encouraging members to get involved and help shape the future of the profession.
