💛 Sleep-disordered breathing (SDB) in children is more common than asthma — yet so many parents don’t realise it.

I was at a brilliant event on Sunday organised by to which they had invited world renowned ENT surgeon and author of "A Parent's Guide to Sleep Disordered Breathing" to speak , and it really brought home how crucial it is to spot the signs early. SDB isn’t just snoring — it can also be mouth breathing, restless sleep,or pauses in breathing at night.

If left unchecked, it can affect brain development, learning, emotional regulation, and even growth. As many of you know, I’ve spent the last 8 years advocating for children with SDB, and Sunday reminded me just how important it is to keep raising awareness — especially as so many infants and children are struggling without anyone realising why.

👂 Monitor your child’s sleep: snoring, mouth breathing, sweating at night, sleeping in strange positions , teeth grinding, restless sleep, bad breath in the morning and consistent daytime tiredness - these are all signals to check in with a professional. Early detection can make a huge difference.

💬 Have you noticed any of these signs in your little one? I’d love to hear your experiences — let’s start the conversation.

"I thought it was just tiredness…"

This photo of my son with deep purple shiners under his eyes still makes me pause. At the time, I thought he just needed more sleep. But dark circles like these can be an airway red flag — a sign the body isn't getting enough oxygen at night.

When I came across an airway screening questionnaire for children, I found myself ticking almost every single box for him. And then — with a lump in my throat — I realised it wasn't just him. It was me too.

To cut a long story short… six years on, we've seen multiple ENTs, three brilliant myofunctional therapists, an airway dentist, and done a sleep study. I'm now waiting for another one for myself. And when I look back at both mine and my son's early years — all the clues were there.

The signs we missed:

Reflux symptoms that lingered despite treatment
A tongue tie that made feeding difficult
Constant tiredness, even after sleep
Mouth breathing
Crowded teeth
Trouble focusing, tantrums, hyperactivity
And when it comes to reflux — so many of the symptoms we see in babies are also airway red flags in disguise:

Arching or pulling off the breast
Clicking or gulping during feeds
Snoring or noisy breathing during sleep
Needing to sleep upright
Frequent waking or catnapping
Chronic congestion or "colic" crying
These are often treated as isolated reflux symptoms… but they can be the body's way of coping with restricted or dysfunctional breathing.

This is exactly why awareness is so important. That's why I'm running an Instagram Live with the amazing on Wednesday, June 25th at 6PM to talk about the link between reflux and sleep. We'll explore how airway issues can present early — and why they're so often misunderstood.

Raise your hand if bedtime takes 2+ hours in your house 🙋‍♀️

Here's the thing - it's usually not about your baby being 'difficult.' There are real, logical reasons why bedtimes drag on.

Understanding the WHY is the first step to getting your evenings back ✨

Which of these resonates most with your family? Tell me in the comments 👇

Our cultural expectations around sleep have shifted drastically in the last century.

And yet babies haven't changed. They still need closeness, connection, and night-time care — especially during these early years of intense brain development.

If you're feeling pressure to get your baby sleeping "independently"...

If you're wondering whether waking, feeding, or needing contact at night is normal...

You're not alone — and you're not doing anything wrong.

✨ Understanding the why behind your baby’s sleep can be the first step in feeling more confident, less conflicted, and more connected.

💛 Need support? I'm here to help you navigate sleep in a way that works for your baby and for you.

Could a tongue tie be affecting your baby’s sleep? 👅💤
It’s not just about feeding — tongue ties can lead to frequent waking, windiness, and unsettled sleep, especially if your baby can’t feed or breathe comfortably.

A 2020 study found that 83% of children improved in sleep after tongue-tie treatment. Another study linked restricted tongue movement with a higher risk of sleep apnoea.

If you’ve been told “everything looks fine” but sleep still feels like a struggle… this could be part of the puzzle 🧩

I work holistically to gently explore what’s underneath sleep challenges — and when needed, I refer families to trusted practitioners like these:

Why Babywearing Can Be a Game-Changer 💛

It’s not just practical — babywearing supports your baby’s development and your own wellbeing and there are so many reasons why it's almost as old as civilisation itself!

Here’s why I recommend it so often:

✨ Babies cry less and communicate more clearly through body language
✨ Regulates both your nervous systems — ideal if crying dysregulates you
✨ Builds strong emotional bonds (especially brilliant for dads)
✨ Can help reduce postpartum anxiety and depression
✨ Supports breastfeeding (yes, you can feed upright on the move!)
✨ Acts like “moving tummy time” — builds core strength and motor skills
✨ Boosts language and sensory integration — your baby’s right in the action
✨ Can help babies with tension or torticollis
✨ Keeps your hands free for your toddler, your coffee, or you

I love babywearing for parents who want to stay calm, connected and responsive — while still meeting their own needs too.

And for contact naps in a carrier — a few parent-tested hacks:

🟡 Invest in a really good carrier — it’ll save your back and arms!
My go to experts are and for tailored babywearing support.

🟡 Turn nap time into you time:
Set up snacks, queue a podcast or show, or head out for a coffee walk while they snooze on you.

🟡 Use the newborn season to your advantage:
Thanks to the stimulation barrier which is still present in the early weeks many babies sleep well in busy places — cafes, friends’ homes, the park — take your contact naps on the go.

🟡 And don’t forget the golden rule…
P*e and eat first! You’ll thank me later 😉

💡 Light and Sleep: Why It Matters for Your Little One

Did you know that toddlers are especially sensitive to light in the evening? Even dim light too close to bedtime can suppress melatonin by up to 80% — that’s the hormone that helps them feel sleepy. 😴

Blue-toned lights (including screens!) can make it harder for your child to settle, while warm, soft lighting supports their natural wind-down process.

Think: lamps, salt lights, or warm-toned plug-in nightlights instead of bright overheads. 🧡

✨ Small tweaks to your evening lighting can lead to calmer, more restful bedtimes — for everyone.

Feeling stuck with bedtime battles or broken nights?
Let’s make sleep feel easier, with support that’s gentle, realistic, and right for your family.
