Back home in London and reflecting on Seamus Murphy photo exhibition 𝗠𝘂𝘀𝗲𝗼 𝗖𝗮𝗺𝗲𝗿𝗮 📸 . From the launch day, the talk atBritish Council with the curator Zelda Cheatle Cheatle, walk through and talk at Museo a few days later. My walking with the Norwegian and Irish ambassadors at the show and appreciating it with a whole new perspective. Getting feedback from friends and strangers who visited. In amongst all this the endless articles and interviews with Seamus, thanks to longform . The show is travelling within India so those of you not in Delhi, watch this space for further information. Meanwhile if you haven’t seen it yet, it is open till October 25th.

Behind every loss to su***de is a story. And behind every story are the people left carrying the love, the grief and the unanswered questions.

For World Su***de Prevention Day, I’m sharing a deeply moving moment from my conversation with Neha Kirpal on Stories Seldom Told.

Neha speaks about losing her brother, Arjun to su***de — and about what it means to live with that loss.

These are difficult conversations, but they are conversations we need to have. Speaking about su***de, listening without judgement and making space for grief can help break the silence that so often surrounds it.

While I take a short break between seasons of Stories Seldom Told, I’m going back into the archives and revisiting some of the conversations that have stayed with me.
Three years ago, I sat down with my friend of more than 25 years, Seema Anand, to talk about ageing — and particularly the way women are taught to think about getting older.
Why does grey hair change the way people speak to a woman? Why do we assume youth is when she must have looked her best? Why are beauty, sexuality and pleasure still so often treated as having an expiry date?
Seema, characteristically, challenged all of it.
What struck me listening again, is how relevant this conversation will continue to feel. Perhaps even more so today.
And her advice for dealing with a milestone birthday? A pole-dancing class. She had just taken her first one at 60.

Pleased to be able to tie a Rakhi on my brother Shashi Tharoor wrist today. Rakhi means “Bond of protection” or “tie of protection” (from the Sanskrit words Raksha for protection and Bandhan to tie). My sister Shobha Tharoor Srinivasan and I are lucky that all 3 of us have a close relationship and will always protect each other. Blessed that my mother could witness the special bond between her children. All the very best to all of you siblings celebrating Raksha Bandhan today.

“Sarbari Sen, who loves life.”
I went into this conversation expecting to talk about resilience. Sarbari Sen made me think instead about our appetite for life.
Sarbari has lived through not one, but two separate primary cancers. She has endured treatment that most of us can barely imagine. And yet, when I asked her what she would like people who know and love her to remember about her, her answer wasn’t about illness, survival or even resilience.
It was simply: “Sarbari Sen, who loves life.”
Because this conversation is ultimately not about cancer. It is about what happens when life becomes uncertain and you decide, nevertheless, to keep embracing it — with humour, gratitude and an extraordinary appetite for living.
At one-point Sarbari tells me she calls herself “God’s chosen one.” There is no self-pity in those words. There is wit, defiance and an acceptance of everything life has placed before her.
At the end of our conversation, she said something else that moved me deeply: “I didn’t know I could speak about it, but I have managed, which is good for me.”
Perhaps that is also why Stories Seldom Told matters so much to me. Sometimes telling our story allows us to hear our own strength differently. Thank you, Sarbari, for trusting me with yours. I feel very privileged to have heard it.

We often celebrate success, family and love. But we rarely talk about the friendships that hold us together when everything else falls apart. This is a conversation about why these bonds matter more than we sometimes realise. It’s about allowing ourselves to be “selfish” and crucially being allowed to be “selfish”. Wise Sarbari, who has Adenocarcinoma of the Pancreas stage 4, has figured this out for all of us. Thanks Sarbari!

When Sarbari Sen was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer, she made a decision,"I'm not going to die every day. When death comes, I'll die only once."
