🎚 3 pointers I would’ve killed for when I first started learning how to mix!

1️⃣ Developing a workflow is key. Once you start mixing, you will have a limited time until you start losing perspective and/or ear fatigue kicks in. Therefore, you should take some time to familiarize yourself with your DAW of choice and using different shortcut keys until they become part of your muscle memory. I’d recommend noting down all the key commands on a piece of paper so you can have it in front of you during mixing until you memorize them. 📝🎹

2️⃣ Ear training is crucial. It helps you understand the types of sounds you can attain and the settings you can use to achieve them. For that, I would advise using different effects such as EQs, compressors, or saturators on different instruments, exaggerating each knob/parameter until you hear a noticeable difference, and trying to pick up on that difference in sound as you gradually tone down the setting. Your ears will thank you later! 🎧✨

3️⃣ Understanding how the signal flows in your DAW is essential. Without it, you won’t be able to determine the order of different effects or recognize how your sound would be affected if you were to swap the order of those plugins. Furthermore, mastering signal flow becomes even more critical when dealing with buses, because the signal could either be duplicated or routed entirely to another channel strip, which can be extremely complicated to grasp as a beginner. 🔀🎛
