Vital Arts Vital Arts is the arts organisation for Barts Health NHS Trust charitably funded to deliver quality

We commission artists, musicians and performers to help improve the hospital environment for patients. We manage two art galleries which ‘bring the outside in,' and an extensive contemporary art collection. We forge links with the hospital community through our diverse programme of artists’ residencies, public art commissions and arts education projects.

These watercolours donated by The Grantchester Pottery for the project are from a series made during lockdown titled ‘The Grantchester Watercolour Society’. They depict views of artist Frida Kahlo’s Casa Azul and the house of architect Luis Barragán.

Artist Diango Hernández has donated a number of works to our project - an initiative which sees leading artists donate works to furnish staff rooms across Barts Health NHS Trust.

He writes: “My grandfather, my uncle, cousins and several other relatives of mine are doctors. I grew up witnessing their great deal of dedication to their profession and patients. These works donated are a celebration, a way of showing my most deep gratitude once more again to ALL NHS personnel, AMOR to all of you.”

" has much less to do with paintings in a staff room, and much more to do with what remains when the world is rapidly changing around you. The project will afford frontline staff a few moments to take stock, absorb the art and ponder the questions that it raises before returning to patient care – like a child hiding in a wardrobe getting ready to come out again.”

We're delighted to announce our new project - a collaboration with Shezad Dawood and Modern Forms.

This initiative sees leading artists donate artworks to enliven 100 Staff rooms across Barts Health NHS Trust and support the wellbeing of staff. With mounting evidence demonstrating the benefits of art on mental health in clinical settings, the initiative will be a lasting legacy of a commitment to the wellbeing of NHS frontline workers.

Great weekend with Music in Hospitals & Care at the Smithfield 150 celebrations organised by Culture Mile.

We joined Vital Arts on Sunday at the Smithfield 150 Festival Culture Mile where our talented musicians Sandro and Liz braved the elements to deliver an interactive drumming performance. There were smiles all round, despite the rain!
