A remarkable selection of Central Asian textiles from the collection of Pip Rau (1938–2024) features in our current timed sale.

A celebrated London dealer and collector, Rau spent decades travelling to Afghanistan and beyond, developing a particular passion for ikat textiles, which she collected for their striking colours, patterns and graphic qualities. Her collection gained international recognition, with works exhibited at the Victoria and Albert Museum and examples now held in the British Museum.

Following the success of Part I earlier this year, this second offering includes Uzbek ikats and chapans, Syrian costume, and a rich variety of embroideries and textiles from Central Asia, Afghanistan and Pakistan.

The Collection of Professor Paul R. Benjamin features in our current sale, Olympia Timed: Textiles & Carpets from the Collections of Pip Rau and Professor Paul Benjamin, comprising lots 193–260.

A Professor of Neuroscience at the University of Sussex, Benjamin was also a passionate collector and scholar of historic South Persian textiles. His interest began some 40 years ago with the purchase of an Afshar rug, developing into an extensive collection of rugs, bags and saddle covers, informed by decades of research and a visit to Iran in 2002.

Following his death in 2024, his family decided to offer much of the collection at auction, allowing others to share in his passion. The sale includes Benjamin’s own research and observations, alongside several previously unpublished pieces.

Join us on Wednesday 21st October at Olympia Auctions for an evening with the BBC’s Chief International Correspondent, Lyse Doucet, in conversation with author and former ITN correspondent Charlotte Hume.

Discussing her book, The Finest Hotel in Kabul: A People’s History of Afghanistan, Doucet will share stories of resilience and hope from a hotel that has witnessed decades of conflict and political change.

Guests can enjoy drinks and view Textiles and Carpets from the Collections of Pip Rau and Professor Paul Benjamin.

Bryan Ingham’s Worpswede, The House on the Moor (1988) reflects the artist’s fascination with the landscape and artistic heritage of northern Germany. Combining oil and collage, the work forms part of his Worpswede Suite, inspired by the historic artists’ colony and its dramatic history.

Our From the Studio: Works from Eighteen Artists’ Estates sale offers a unique opportunity to acquire works directly from the studios and estates of a diverse group of British artists. Bidding is now open, with the sale closing on 11th October.
