For those who knew Philippe Missillier, his hummed โ€˜fanfareโ€™ was a familiar and much-loved part of encountering him at exhibitions and auctions around the world. It was a small reflection of the warmth, wit and character that made his company so memorable.

Over half a century, Philippe became one of the leading connoisseurs and independent scholars of antique arms and armour from Europe, India and the Islamic world. Consulted by major museums and collectors, his expertise was built on a lifetime of looking and learning: visiting museums, attending countless auctions and assembling an important reference library.

Yet for all his immense knowledge, Philippe wore his scholarship lightly. Generous with colleagues, good-humoured and invariably able to raise a smile, he was as beloved for his company as he was respected for his remarkable expertise.

On 9th September, Olympia Auctions is honoured to offer his collection of Fine Antique Arms and Armour.

This beautiful painting by British artist Roger Wagner (b. 1957), titled โ€˜Butlerโ€™s Wharf, Bermondseyโ€™ (1988), is lot 60 in our upcoming London | Ancient & Modern live sale.

For over two centuries, Londonโ€™s Docklands were the commercial engine of the British Empire, connecting the capital to the wider world. By the 1980s, however, containerisation and larger vessels had shifted trade downriver, leaving the docks obsolete. Major docks closed between 1967 and 1981, taking some 150,000 jobs and an entire riverside culture with them. Roger Wagner captures Bermondsey at this moment of uncertainty: long shadows, empty warehouses and abandoned cranes evoke a lost world awaiting the flats and offices that would soon transform it.

A painter of strong religious conviction, Wagner draws comparison with Stanley Spencer in his transposition of biblical episodes into contemporary English landscapes. Here, the deserted Docklands become a modern Babylonian land of exile, haunted by memory.

Created at Versailles in the early 19th century by Nicolas-Noรซl Boutet, this exceptional presentation-quality flintlock gun combines extraordinary craftsmanship with a fascinating diplomatic history.

Its blued barrel is scattered with gold stars and richly embellished with chased and engraved gold, including Ottoman crescents, a Turkish turban, martial trophies and flowering foliage. The figured wooden stock is finely carved, complemented by silver-gilt mounts, ebony, horn and further gilt details.

The distinctive Ottoman iconography suggests it was intended as a diplomatic gift for the Dey of Algiers, at a time when relations between France and Algeria were becoming increasingly strained. Boutet, directeur-artiste of the Versailles Arms Manufactory, was renowned for creating lavish presentation arms for military heroes and foreign heads of state.
Sold at Sothebyโ€™s New York in 1992, the piece later entered the Philippe Missillier Collection.

Made in Milan over five centuries ago, this extremely rare armet comes from the celebrated Missaglia workshop, the leading armourers of 15th-century Milan.

Founded by Tommaso Missaglia, the workshop supplied armour to some of Renaissance Italyโ€™s most powerful figures. Tommaso and his son were appointed court armourers to Francesco Sforza, Duke of Milan, in 1450, while their clients extended from the Gonzaga court in Mantua to Lionello dโ€™Este, Marquis of Ferrara and Modena.

By the end of the century, the Missaglia workshops had become a major international enterprise, producing armour of exceptional quality and sophistication. This close-fitting armet, dating to the mid-late 15th century, is a rare survival from this remarkable period of Milanese armour-making.
