One of the many things I love about Chinese Medicine is that the treatments are not only for restoring balance and wellbeing- they help with those things so that we may carry out our purpose in life.
The end goal of Chinese Medicine is to support others to do what they are here to do; to fully become who they are here to be.
To walk their path and fulfil their fullest expression, their purpose, their Tao.
In Chinese Medicine, our Ming aka Destiny resides in our Kidneys- the source and root of our life force.
It is believed that everyone carries a blueprint, like an acorn that has the potential to become an oak tree, and it is up to us to fulfil it.

Upcoming Events in February:

Imbolc Womens’ Circle 🔥
Sun, 1st February
4-6pm

Let’s gather during the full moon in a womens’ circle to celebrate and honor the Imbolc season.

Imbolc is the midway point between the Winter Solstice and the Spring Equinox, when the seeds of new beginnings are stirring in the ground and waiting to emerge.

This is a time of purification and releasing the old, tending to the growing flame of new life and celebrating the increasing light.

Let’s tune into the season, have a releasing ceremony, and reflect on what is emerging as we step forward into the year ahead.

Tea Ceremony Meditation 🍵
Sun, 22nd February
2-4pm

Hi! 👋
I’m popping on here with a winter-solstice-walk-selfie and a gentle reminder that there really is no rush right now to get moving for the new year.

For all of us in the Northern Hemisphere, we are in the heart of Winter. This is still a time for us to rest, dream & reflect. ❄️

I personally wait until the 10th/15th of January, when it starts to feel like Imbolc (the midway point btwn the Winter Solstice & Spring Equinox) before I start coming out of my winter cave and make some moves- and even then, I do it slowly.

Also, sending a reminder that my shamanic healing sessions are 15% off until the end of January, before the prices will slightly raise in February.

If you’ve been thinking of having a session with me, you can take advantage of this offer. And Winter is a great time to do this deep soul work. 🙏

Winter Season- Filling our Well, Strengthening our Will

In Chinese Medicine, the Winter season is associated with the Water element and Kidney & Bladder channel systems.
The Kidneys are the power source for our bodies, and it is where our reserves are stored.
They also store our Will.
And they govern the developmental stages of our lives- growth/maturation, reproduction and aging.

Winter is when we are meant to nurture our Kidneys and replenish our reserves, so that we may be recharged during the more active spring and summer seasons.

The emotion associated with the Kidneys is Fear. Fear can weaken the Kidneys, and an imbalanced Kidney system can cause feelings of Fear and lack of Willpower. However, when the Kidneys are balanced and vitalized, our Determination and Will becomes strengthened.

Here are some tips to support our Kidney during the Winter Season:
- Sleep & Rest: Wintertime is when we are meant to conserve and replenish our energy through rest. One of the best ways to do that is to go to sleep before 12 (the most Yin time of the day).
It is even more ideal to sleep before 11, as that is when our bodies can best detoxify and restore itself.

-Herbs & Foods that Support the Kidney:
Have dark-coloured foods, salty foods, root vegetables and warm meals like soups & stews
-Black Soybeans, Kidney Beans, Black Beans
-Nettle/Nettle Seed
-Black Sesame, Walnuts, Chestnuts
-Seaweed, Seafood, Miso
-Blackberries, Mulberries, Blueberries

-Keep the Lower Back & Feet Warm:
These areas are connected to Kidneys, so support them by keeping them warm.

-Take this time for Reflection and Stillness:
Meditation, Journaling, and other such practices are great to do this time of year.

-Take Baths:
Water is a healing element associated with the Kidneys. Take a bath with mineral-rich salts or even seaweed to promote well-being this season.

In my experience, I’ve noticed that from mid-December until mid-January is when the energies are most Yin.
And I feel the necessity to give myself more time for rest and introspection.
So I try to honor that and intentionally make less plans during this period.

I’ve also noticed that I tend to have more significant dreams during this time of year. This is when we are more able to connect with the unconscious, the hidden depths.
Perhaps you’ve noticed this too?

Let’s take this time to rest and restore, reflect and dream. 🌛
And take notice of what comes up!

On one of our hikes in the mountains in Korea, our tour guide took us to this hidden shamanic shrine in Bukhansan and told us its story...
The people who tend this shrine are a family of shamans. One night, the father had a dream- the spirit of one of the mountains in the area appeared to him and told him to set up this shrine, at this particular place.
Interestingly, most of the time the Sanshin (Mountain Gods) appear with tigers as their companions- but this one appeared with a horse.
The shaman is clearly a skilled artist, as he is the one who created this amazing image of the Sanshin. Upon a closer look, I noticed he not only painted, but also carved into the stone.
I was impressed with his devotion, as I could imagine how much work this must have been!

As I’ve mentioned, the shrine is hidden and not easy to find. This is because just outside of the area, there is a sign telling people to keep out. This was not put up by the family of shamans, but by the Korean government. They generally discourage shamanic activity- and they certainly don’t want tourists seeing this side of Korea. Sometimes there is even a wall of concrete put in front of shamanic shrines to cover them- our tour guide showed us some of the concrete remains around one of them. So as my tour guide also mentioned, freedom of religion in Korea is not so clear cut.

So why has shamanism generally been discouraged and suppressed in Korea? Because those ways are old and superstitious, and Korea is a modern place- that’s the way they want to be seen.
And that’s a shame, because shamanism is the native spiritual tradition of Korea, and I believe it is where the root and spirit of the nation can be found.
It has played a big part in shaping the culture and the psyche of the people, and even through it has been suppressed, it is ever-present.

After almost 20 years since my last visit, I’ve just returned from a trip to Korea, which is where my mother’s line is from. 🇰🇷

While I enjoyed the sights, food, shopping and cute cafes, I primarily visited to connect with my ancestral roots.

I believe that the root and spirit of Korea can be found in its shamanic tradition and in its mountains, and I wanted to explore those things.

The land of Korea is 70% mountains (that’s a lot of power!) and there is a belief that the mountains have presiding spirits called the Sanshin (Mountain God/Spirit).
A big part of Korean shamanism is communing with the mountains and its Sanshin.

I visited several sacred mountains and explored Korean shamanism- I even had a reading with a Korean shaman.
I feel fortunate to have found some rare and unique tour guides who took me around the shamanic sites, sharing information about the traditions and practices.

On this trip, I also learned more about Korean culture, I learned about the native plants and herbs on the land, and I met and spent time with some of my relatives.

Here are some captured moments from my visit to Bukhansan National Park and giving respect and greetings to the local Sanshin. 🗻
