๐น Why Do CCTV Cameras Sometimes Have a Red Light?
Have you ever noticed a small red light on a CCTV camera and wondered what it means? Not every red light has the same purpose, and it can depend on the camera model and how the system is configured.
Some cameras use a visible indicator light to show that the device is powered, active, or recording. Other cameras use infrared (IR) LEDs, which are designed to help the camera see in low-light conditions without producing light that is clearly visible to the human eye.
When it becomes dark, many night-vision cameras automatically activate their infrared LEDs. The camera can then capture footage in low-light or near-dark conditions, often producing black-and-white images at night.
This is particularly useful for monitoring entrances, car parks, warehouses, building perimeters, and other areas where security is required after dark. However, the exact meaning of a red indicator varies between manufacturers and models, so a red light should not automatically be assumed to mean that a camera is recording.
Modern CCTV technology combines visible indicators, infrared illumination, sensors, and increasingly intelligent video analytics to provide better surveillance in different environments.
