A 'budget' is NOT a bucket load of money you HAVE to completely spend.

It's money your company has given you to invest.

It needs to provide the highest 'return on investment' and 'value' to the business.

Spend it like it's your own.

Tell me I'm wrong.

3. Don't be lazy. Do your homework.

4. Don't underestimate the time it takes.

5. Don't ignore contracts.

What others would you add?

We wish this was fiction, but in our 30 year procurement career, we've seen this happen on several occasions.

Word of advice. Check the brief. Check the details. If you're not sure, ask an experienced buyer.

Trust us. You won't want to explain this costly mistake to the head of the department.

Have you seen this happen?

How many times have you heard this...?

Employee: I ordered what I need for my department. I'm not responsible for buying for other departments. Only mine.

Owner/CEO/Finance Director: 👇🏼

𝗧𝗼𝗽 𝗧𝗶𝗽: 𝗗𝗢𝗡'𝗧 𝗪𝗢𝗥𝗞 𝗜𝗡 𝗦𝗜𝗟𝗢.

Why? Because its a crazy way for a business to spend money. We see each department spending their own budget with different suppliers and it just doesn't make sense. The best approach is to consolidate all the purchases and go out to the market. You'll get better rates. Trust me!

What do you do when suppliers talk about raising their prices from 1 January?

1. Accept it
2. Start looking elsewhere
3. Re-negotiate
4. Other (please comment)

Hands up. Who does this...?

You...

🚩 Use a supplier who's a friend.

🚩 Have ALWAYS bought the old way.

🚩 Share your budget with potential suppliers.

🚩 Tell a supplier they've got the job even BEFORE discussing costs.

In most cases, these are red flags to poor buying.

If you want to become a better buyer or have a career in Procurement, our purchasing 101 course is a great starter for 10.

𝗖𝗮𝗻 𝘄𝗲 𝗦𝗧𝗢𝗣 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘀𝗵𝗮𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗴. 𝗣𝗟𝗘𝗔𝗦𝗘.

There seems to be an increase in shaming others for:

1. Asking for a cheaper price.
2. Asking for a cost breakdown.

I've can honestly say, I have never seen so many '𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝘁𝗹𝗲𝗱' businesses on this platform who shame and openly state they would rather walk away from new business than have this conversation.

First of all, I'm glad you're in a position to potentially turn down business.

Secondly, don't assume people who ask these questions will be difficult to work with. They're just being savvy buyers.

And thirdly, big businesses have Procurement departments for a reason, and these trained professionals will always ask these questions.

Remember, we're not always going to be suppliers. Sometimes we're going to be buyers too.

The question is, if you're not asking these questions when buying, how well are YOU buying for your business..?

I bet you skipped right over it.

Did you know I added a letter to it?

You checked.

I didn't.

Have you noticed, that's how we read articles, posts, briefs, T&C's and contracts.

Now imagine commenting or agreeing to something we skipped over...

Scary thought, right?

Do yourself a favour. Take your time. Read it. Or get a legal person or expert to do it. Don't jump in or it could bite you on the arse!

"𝗜𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗯𝗲𝘀𝘁 𝗽𝗿𝗶𝗰𝗲?"

THIS is one of the first questions a buyer should ask a supplier when the spec has been understood, and you get a price from them.

Why?

Because if you don't ask, you don't get. Simple.

Imagine a 5%-15% discount you never would have got if you never asked that question...

Now of course the supplier can say no. That's their right.

But even if they say no on a discount, you need to understand you can still negotiate better terms. For example:

👉 Better payment terms
👉 More product
👉 Added services

You just need to know how.
