"The British Business in China: Position Paper" is an annual report created by the British Chamber of Commerce in China (BritCham China) to provide advocacy and representation on behalf of British businesses operating in China.

The paper is directly presented to the Ministry of Commerce, China (MOFCOM), DIT and other key stakeholders in the and governments, in order to directly inform trade policy and negotiations. There are a number of challenges that are felt to be contributing to the erosion of the once stable and relatively predictable environment in China that British businesses have previously been able to depend on.

We will focus on and infrastructure opportunities in both countries while announcing a cooperation initiative between the IoDโ€™s Property and Built Environment Group, the Association of Real Estate Investors of Turkey (GYODER / Gayrimenkul Yatฤฑrฤฑmcฤฑlarฤฑ DerneฤŸi) and Institute of Directors (IoD) and Turkeyโ€™s Foreign Economic Relations Board (DEIK - Foreign Economic Relations Board).

The UK - Turkey Free Trade Agreement was signed on December 29th, 2020 by Turkeyโ€™s Minister for Trade Ruhsar Pekcan and the British Ambassador to Turkey, Sir Dominick Chilcott.

The agreement will secure preferential tariffs for the 7,600 UK businesses that exported goods to in 2019 and for the very many Turkish businesses that export to the , ensuring the continued tariff-free flow of goods and maintaining vital supply chains in the automotive and manufacturing sectors.

At the IoD, we are keen to support the creation of a Retail Special Interest Group (SIG) to bring together professionals from the sector with an interest to facilitate the sharing of knowledge, innovation, digital transformation, and opportunities to enhance growth and value to stakeholders.

The sector represents ~5% of the total UK's GDP and gave employment to 3M people in 2021. Retail sales volume has more than doubled in the UK since 1989 and besides the sector has been hardly impacted both by the digital revolution and the covid pandemic, it is one of the most dynamic sectors in the UK economy and with a strong growth forecast on online sales for the next years. London doesn't sit apart from this reality and as a global city has a big say in the future and of retail.
