Vanguardia was engaged to deliver specialist acoustics and audio visual (AV) consultancy for Roig Arena, a major new sports and entertainment venue in Valencia, Spain.

The 47,000m² venue seeks to deliver world-class music, sports and corporate events, with a range of multifunctional events spaces and bars as well as the main arena space.

Roig Arena will serve as the home base for both the men’s and women’s Valencia basketball teams. With a seating capacity of 15,600 that expands to 18,600 with standing room, the arena will offer an unparalleled spectator experience. Premium hospitality options and a flexible, intimate seating layout further elevate the venue for different kinds of performances.

When determining the success of a multi-function arena, acoustics is a critical factor. Too long a reverberation time and the venue will be unsuitable for concert events, too short and it will fail to deliver the impact and atmosphere required for a live sports event. The frequency response of the reverberation time will add or detract from the events being held and subtleties such as ratios between direct and reverberant sound and late reflections can make a venue unplayable if not carefully controlled through detailed design. The acoustic design must assure a vibrant and energetic atmosphere for sports and optimum acoustic conditions for concerts.

The impact of the arena on nearby residential centres also needs to be considered within the acoustics strategy, to mitigate against noise breaking out from the different activities taking place in the arena above accepted levels.

The arena’s audio-visual technology component must also be designed to incorporate outstanding solutions that allow the venue to compete with other arenas in the country, to win events and music tours, making Roig Arena one of the preferred options for promoters and artists.

Imagination instructed partners Solotech (PA and sound services) and Vanguardia to assist with noise and vibration monitoring for Visa Live at le Louvre concert, where Post Malone performed in the Cour Carrée at the Musée du Louvre, Paris for the very first time in its history.

The Louvre has never been used for this sort of cultural activity before and somewhat exceptionally the issue was not about music noise impacting residents. Instead the brief was to monitor low frequency airborne noise induced impact on the priceless national and international treasures housed within, to manage the risk of induced vibration damage.

Low frequency noise from the bass and sub-bass components of music ranging from around 32 Hz to 125 Hz 1/1 octave has the potential to induce resonance effects that can cause fragile elements of artefacts on display to displace or even fall off, and for small objects in display cases on glass shelves to “walk” and drop on to the display case floor and break. Vanguardia staff travelled to Paris to scope out the scale and complexity of the project (on behalf of Imagination Ltd.) and engage with the curators and conservators at the museum to understand what artefacts and art pieces were most at risk and their location within the museum.

Prior to this, Vanguardia worked with Solotech to model the propagation and distribution of sound from the L-Acoustics PA in the Cour Carrée so that the museum’s risk assessment could be matched with the noise model to identify were high levels of low frequency sound were expected to interact with high risk artefacts and art pieces. Several propagation tests were carried out over three days in conjunction with staff from The Louvre to determine how much vibration was caused and where this might impact the art and historic artefacts.

The tests involved starting music at low levels and then gradually increasing whilst simultaneously observing and monitoring vibration affecting artefacts and monitoring the associated sound levels within The Louvre’s many rooms and at the front of house mixing desk. This established precautionary limits for the front of house mixing desk that facilitated a very successful show for Visa and suitably managed to protect all the priceless treasures at this site. We are pleased to report that the surviving arm of the Venus De Milo had not fallen off and the Mona Lisa was still hanging where she always has been on display!”

We were thrilled to be back at Hyde Park for the British Summer Time (BST) concert series. This iconic event featured a diverse lineup of legendary headliners, from Kings of Leon to Andrea Bocelli, Stevie Nicks and Robbie Williams. Vanguardia's Harry Lang mentioned "Given it’s central location, Hyde Park is a particularly noise sensitive event site. We closely monitored and managed noise levels from each stage to ensure compliance with licence conditions whilst maximising sound levels for the entire audience. Thanks to the collaborative efforts of the entire crew, and the unwavering enthusiasm of fans (even in adverse weather conditions), the event was a resounding success."

Some comments below from the Vanguardia team who along with F1 Acoustics once again successfully provided noise management across the entire Glastonbury Festival site last weekend.

Glastonbury is Vanguardia’s largest undertaking in terms of equipment deployment. This year saw 19 MeTrao units being installed across sources offsite and 4 at nearby noise sensitive receptors, working across 4 days of near round the clock entertainment - Ed Lawrence

Day one at Glastonbury is done. It was a pleasure to work with Will at Dua Lipa to put on a stunning show. It sounded great! Day 2 at Glastonbury is done. What a show accumulating in Coldplay’s headline slot. Well done to Dan and Tony for putting on a great show. - Daryl Prasad

Finsbury Park saw an eclectic mix of music over the first two weekends in July, with Jamie T, Pulp and The 1975 followed by Wireless Festival featuring the likes of Travis Scott and 50 Cent.

Vanguardia were once again managing the noise, always a challenge at Finsbury Park, made more difficult by some particularly unfavourable winds on the second Friday.

Associate Acoustic Consultant Jonty Stewart said "Noise levels were successfully managed within the licence limits despite the weather, and the sun shone warmly (most of the time!) on the happy crowds of festival goers."

Vanguardia provided sound management services for the British Summer Time concert series in Hyde Park, London. Featuring headline acts such as Bruce Springsteen, Billy Joel, Lana Del Ray, Take That and Guns’N’Roses – you could say this was a big deal!

9 concert days and 8 “open house” event days ensuring compliance with event licence conditions.

Senior consultant Harry Lang said "The MeTrao noise monitoring system, once again, allowed us to effectively manage music noise levels from the event. Remote monitoring functionality makes it possible to analyse real-time noise levels from any position at any time."

The Martin Audio Ltd sound system on the Great Oak Stage, provided and optimised by Solotech Inc., enabled excellent music noise levels in the audience whilst minimising disturbance to the surrounding area.

An outstanding effort from all involved.

Vanguardia were delighted to recently provide noise management services across Glastonbury Festival this year, one of the world’s largest and most prestigious events.

The Arctic Monkeys, Elton John and Guns n’ Roses headliners were just 3 of over 1,000 acts that took to the Somerset fields over 5 days.

The Vanguardia and F1 Acoustics team were in operation throughout day and night, to control sound from the multiple stages and areas. MeTrao networked noise monitoring system was once again utilised to effectively monitor and regulate sound levels arising from the festival, feeding information back from numerous stages and off-site monitors to our control room.

Glastonbury Festival requires a tremendous effort from all involved. It was an honour to be part of such a dedicated and hardworking team. Vanguardia look forward to working again next year…

Ushuaïa Ibiza Beach Hotel join forces with Vanguardia to deliver superb sound levels for their 2023 season. Calvin Harris opened his 2023 summer residency on a phenomenal sound system designed by Vanguardia in conjunction with specialist acoustic mitigation to increase the sound levels within the #1 open air venue in Europe, for the ultimate clubber’s experience when paired with the spectacular visuals and stage shows supplied by production company High Scream.

Ushuaïa Ibiza is world renowned for its elaborate productions and stage shows and has recently been voted as one of the top #5 clubs in the world, and recruited the support of Vanguardia’s sound specialists to complete the ultimate outdoor clubbing experience.

Speaking about the project, Jim Griffiths, Director at Vanguardia said: “Our focus at Ushuaïa was reducing external noise levels without compromising in any way the live show experience. This was a massive challenge given there’s a lot of moving components which influence each other and needed to be incredibly finely balanced to get the client what they wanted.”

Regarding the outcome, Yann Pissenem, owner & CEO of Ushuaïa Ibiza, has added: “Our goal is always to raise the bar and give the best possible experience for both the clubbers and DJs alike, and now, we feel we have created the perfect audio solution that will help keep Ushuaïa Ibiza as the #1 outdoor venue on the island, for many years to come.”

Vanguardia initially conducted a site survey to identify areas where improvements could be made. They had one shot to get this right, so enlisted the use of a state-of-the-art acoustic camera to specifically see where sound was escaping from the venue. Vanguardia then engaged with local architect team FRAILE PROJECT and specialist acoustic barrier provider Fluid Design and Construction Ltd to implement acoustic solutions to reduce sound egress.

Simultaneously Vanguardia worked with loudspeaker manufacture d&b audiotechnik to design a sound system which would deliver high sound quality to the audience whilst reducing external noise levels, which was subsequently provided and installed by the venue sound system provider S Group | France .

Olly Creedy, Vanguardia’s Associate Director said: “The combination of the sound system design and other elements really does what the predictions show and the attenuation between the internal and external sound levels is unheard of elsewhere for an open-air venue.”

From the artist’s perspective Wayne Sargeant, the well-respected sound engineer for Calvin Harris who has worked for artists at Ushuaïa for many years stated he, “loved the new system at Ushuaïa, which now feels like a real club environment in the outdoors. The bass is powerful and musical. This was the best sounding show I have had at Ushuaïa.”

The Institute of Sound, Communication and Visual Engineers (ISCVE Ltd) hosted their annual ISCVEx Members’ Day and AGM on the 21st March ’23, once again in the sumptuous surroundings of the Coombe Abbey Hotel, Warwickshire.

As is customary at ISCVEx events, the Members’ Day and AGM precedes the Networking Dinner (held on the same day) swiftly followed by the Main Exhibition on Day 2.

As part of this year’s ISCVEx activities, the Institute cordially invited long-standing corporate Vanguardia member; Alex Krasnic (Principal Acoustics Consultant) to deliver the pre-AGM presentation entitled; “Bolting the door before the jolting horse: lessons learned for the Installed Sound/AV industry when engaging with Architects”.

Adopting an insightful approach for Installed Sound and AV professionals by outlining of some of the key aspects to consider when collaborating with Architects (particularly those leading multi-disciplinary design projects), Alex’s hybrid presentation was well-received by the combined 40+ ISCVE members in attendance (in person and online), culminating in a lively Q&A forum-style discussion at the end.
