Let’s talk about the step up from school rugby to college rugby. Both domestic and international players can be surprised by the step up in the calibre of play at the college level and the commitment to training. So, how do you prepare yourself for the step up? 1. Don’t under estimate the quality of play. 2. Don’t over value your own importance as a recruit. 3. Do your research - watch old games and study them to understand the team’s strengths and opportunity areas.. 4. Take your off season and pre-season seriously. Run. Lift. Train. Repeat. Here, Coach Mile Keifer from Mount St Mary’s shares his thoughts on the step up! You can hear more from him and HC Jay Myles on American Rugby Scholarships’ YouTube channel.

Last week, I met with Coach Brad Sandig at the University of Rio Grande in SW Ohio. Coach Sandig shared with me about the culture at Rio, his plans for the season, what pre-season training is like, and their facilities at Rio. Here, we overlook the rugby pitch and its brand new field house.

Joshua Williams is a UK/US dual national and valued member of the Haileybury 1st XV. See his full highlight reel here: https://youtube.com/shorts/qNqDEYcAHCs?is=Gp0c06SE_cilctOS. He earned exceptional GCSE results and is currently pursuing the rigorous IB curriculum. Prior to his Year 12 move to Haileybury on a rugby scholarship, Joshua was chosen to be part of the Saracens U16 Player Development Group. He later captained the Herts County U17 team.

A dominant flanker / second row, Joshua is a powerful forward known for his relentless over-the-ball work, brutal defensive rucks, and strong ball carrying. He’s exceptionally quick for his 6’3” size and possesses an exceptionally high rugby IQ—reading the game superbly and making his presence felt as a set-piece threat.

In fact, his former coach said ‘What truly sets Joshua apart is his leadership. On the field, he exudes a natural authority, motivating and guiding his teammates with both words and actions. His ability to remain calm under pressure and inspire confidence in others makes him an invaluable asset.’

Positive, hardworking, disciplined, and driven, Joshua is a standout on the pitch. Off the field, he’s equally focused, with ambitions to study business and finance at a top US university in the Fall 2027.

Joshua is one to watch.

Every coach has their unique style and every team has its own culture. At Marian University in Indianapolis, HC John Harley takes care of the coaching and Mrs Harley provides the behind the scenes support. The two combine to create terrific team environment, devoted (and well fed!) team members, and a top notch NCR D1 men’s rugby team! You can hear Coach Harley’s full length interview on the American Rugby Scholarships’ YouTube channel.

Today, I am at Mount St Mary’s University in Emmitsburg, MD. The Mount is a top 10 CRAA D1A men’s rugby program. In addition, the Mount is home to a competitive women’s NIRA/NCAA women’s rugby programme.

Mount St Mary’s operates a meritocracy. The best person for the position plays. It doesn’t matter if you are a first year, transfer, or experienced team member. Today, freshman and American Rugby Scholarships’ athlete, played and scored for in the first game of the new season. Well done, Carson and congrats on the win, Mount!

There are so many things to consider when choosing a college. Most of it, understandably is about getting the fit right for the student athlete. However, some things impact the whole family. Budget is one! Another is location because in addition to living there, families will be visiting that location (perhaps) several times over a 4-5 year period. This is St Charles, MO, home to top men’s and women’s rugby programmes and one of the best and most active small towns in America. In addition to having a vibrant downtown area and a series of amazing festivals throughout the year, the icing on the cake is that it is only 15 minutes from the St Louis airport.

Damien Cherry-Brown - Winger - Fall 2027.

American Rugby Scholarships is delighted to announce that we are working with standout American winger, Damien Cherry-Brown!

A dynamic and exciting winger, Damien brings an outstanding combination of speed, agility, physicality, and game intelligence to the field. His ability to read defenses, identify and attack gaps, and create opportunities makes him a constant threat in attack. With the pace to chase down opposition and the determination to make crucial defensive stops, Damien is a player who makes an impact at both ends of the field.

Damien thrives on contact and physicality, embracing the challenges that come with playing an intense and competitive brand of rugby. He is a strong communicator who values teamwork and understands the importance of working together to achieve success. A quick study with an eagerness to learn and develop, Damien has the attributes and attitude to continue progressing at the next level.

A homegrown talent, Damien is now beginning his journey toward playing US college rugby in Fall 2027. Academically, he is interested in pursuing Animal Science or Business, giving him the opportunity to combine his passion for learning with his ambition to compete at a high level of collegiate rugby.

Damien is excited to take on the challenge of playing and studying US college rugby, developing as both a student and athlete, and finding the college environment that best matches his academic, athletic, and personal ambitions.

We are thrilled to be working with Damien and look forward to helping him find the perfect fit for the next stage of his rugby and academic journey!

Today, I visited with Principia College’s head Men’s Rugby coach Peter Lang and his assistant coaches. Principia has a long and storied rugby history, but after a few years of struggle, Coach Lang has been brought in to return the team to its former glory and continue to develop it and its players. Principia will be playing in the CRAA D1AA division and the team is already on campus and has hit the ground running.
