Last month, Prime Minister Boris Johnson announced that hospitality venues could reopen from 12th April for outdoor service only, but this would depend on how the pandemic progresses during the coming weeks.

If all goes as planned, from 12th April, people can meet friends or family in beer gardens or eat dinner outside as a group of six or as a mixture of two households.

According to the industry group UK Hospitality, England’s pubs are being deluged by people eager to book space from when beer gardens are due to reopen. One Leeds pub claimed that it had taken in 700 bookings in just five hours last week (BBC report 6th March).

Figures produced by The Office for National Statistics (ONS) on 23rd February have shown that unemployment rose to its highest level in almost five years with a total of 1.74 million people being out of work in the three months to December 2020. The figures also show that around 589,000 of the total affected are under the age of 25.

It makes for grim reading but, on a more positive note, the report also stated that 83,000 more people became employed in January this year compared with the previous month. As well as this report, research carried out by the human resources body CIPD has shown that 56% of 2000 firms they surveyed planned to hire in the first three months of 2021.

So, let’s hope that this upward trend (along with the Government’s current plan to ease Covid restrictions) will breathe new and lasting life into the UK job market.
