“The level of bidding reflects just how rarely works of this importance appear on the market” – Lara L’vov-Basirov, Associate Director | Head of Old Master, British & European Pictures
In Roseberys Old Master, British & European Pictures sale, two original watercolour illustrations for The Jungle Book by Rudyard Kipling, long thought lost, sold for a combined total of £130,480.
The first work by Charles Maurice Detmold, depicting the Bandar-log or “monkey people”, saw intense bidding both online and on the telephone. One phone bidder hesitated at £26,000 before returning with a final bid of £27,000. The lot eventually sold online to a UK buyer for £36,640.
The second illustration by Edward Julius Detmold, depicting Mowgli with the black panther Bagheera, soared past its £15,000–£20,000 estimate. Four bidders online and on the telephones pursued the work before it finally sold to a phone bidder for £93,840.
The two watercolours are extraordinarily rare. Their emergence increases the number of known surviving originals from the original set of sixteen illustrations to just seven. The watercolours were created in 1902–03 for Sixteen Illustrations of Subjects from Kipling’s ‘The Jungle Book’, a deluxe portfolio commissioned by Macmillan & Co and published in 1903.
The two watercolours were produced by the twin artistic prodigies Edward Detmold (1883–1957) and Charles Maurice Detmold (1883–1908). Published when the brothers were just twenty years old, the project proved to be their final joint venture, as Maurice tragically took his own life at the age of twenty-five.

Sixteen original watercolours were created for The Jungle Book; for over a century, only five were thought to have survived, until this remarkable rediscovery.
Roseberys are thrilled to present two original watercolour illustrations for Rudyard Kipling’s The Jungle Book, long thought lost until now, and will be offered in Roseberys’ Old Master, British & European Pictures auction.
The drawings, which depict scenes from The Jungle Book, had been hanging unrecognised on the walls of a London family home for decades. Extraordinarily rare, they increase the number of known surviving originals from a set of 16 to just seven.
Since the Roseberys announcement, a further original watercolour has come to light at Bateman’s, East Sussex. This brings the total of known original watercolours to seven, two of which are now in the Collection of the National Trust.
The revelation has astounded the owners of the two watercolours: “These drawings were never treated as ‘important’ works in our family - they were simply part of our home,” they explained. “Finding out that they restore a missing piece of the visual history of Kipling’s The Jungle Book, has been completely unexpected.”
The watercolours were created in 1902/3 for Sixteen Illustrations of Subjects from Kipling’s ‘The Jungle Book’, a deluxe portfolio commissioned by Macmillan & Co in 1903.
The two newly rediscovered works were produced by the twin artistic prodigies Edward Detmold (1883-1957) and Charles Maurice Detmold (1883-1908), known as Maurice, and were published when they were just 20. It proved to be their final joint venture, as Maurice tragically took his own life aged 25.

Roseberys Rewind: Shackleton’s Silver Tea Set 🪙
For the final rewind of the year, Roseberys are thrilled to reflect on this remarkable tea set from the September Silver auction. This Edwardian silver tea service was once owned by Irish explorer Ernest Shackleton (1874–1922) sold for £20,990 in, almost seven times its high estimate.
Crafted around 1900 by James Dixon & Sons of Sheffield, the three-piece set bears the Shackleton family crest and motto “Fortitudine Vincimus” (“Through endurance, we conquer”) - words that later inspired the name of his most famous ship, the Endurance.
The tea service was reputedly presented to Shackleton in New York in 1910 during his North American lecture tour following the 1907 Ni**od expedition to the Antarctic. It descended to Shackleton’s daughter Cecily (1906-1957) and was gifted by her to Rena Dodds, who was a close friend of Cecily’s and godmother to the current owner’s sister.
Shackleton is one of Britain’s most celebrated explorers. His leadership of the 1914-16 Endurance expedition, when the ship was trapped and sunk in Antarctic ice, cemented his place in history.
After months stranded, Shackleton and five others made an 800-mile voyage across treacherous seas to secure the rescue of his entire crew. In 2022 the wreck was found upright and remarkably preserved, renewing global interest in his story.
Gary Shaw, Associate Director & Auction House Manager, explores the history of the great adventurer Shackleton and his wonderful tea set.
Happy New Year from everyone at Roseberys, we look forward to many more incredible discoveries in 2026!

Roseberys Rewind: an extraordinary German stoneware figure with a fascinating story ✨
Roseberys were delighted to present this saltglazed figure in the October Fine & Decorative sale. This was possibly made as a doll given its relatively small size, but may also have been used as a candle snuffer or wine cup. It is likely that this figure was excavated in Ipswich given that Ipswich was a ‘kontor’ or major trading post for the Hanseatic League, with Westphalian merchants in particular exerting a large influence over trade in the town.
James Quarterman, Ceramics and Glass Specialist, reflects on this wonderful item from its rarity and craftsmanship to its connection with people from the distant past.
From Fine & Decorative on Wednesday 1 December 📆
LOT 214: A rare German brown saltglaze stoneware figure or doll, possibly Aachen or Raeren, 16th century
Price Realised: £2,362
