Women and men start in the workplace at 50/50, yet just 4.2% of CEOs are women at Fortune 500 companies. Why is this the case? The problem is middle management. This is a time when women typically gain more responsibility at home and also at work. One of the biggest challenges is caregiving, which has historically been a female responsibility. To eliminate this challenge, Shelley Zalis believes that companies should "create a mandatory parental leave policy for both men and women." What do you think? What a fantastic evening last night at our pilot event for Beneath The Surface series. In honour of the International Women’s Day we chose the topic of Finding Yourself and decided to have ourselves on the panel for the first event so everyone could get to know us and our stories.
Right from the start we wanted to make this a very open and honest conversation. We delved into a variety of topics exploring why it is important for us to go ‘beneath the surface’, what does ‘finding yourself’ mean to us and how we define success. We all shared our real stories and struggles throughout the years of building businesses.
It was wonderful to see how our openness ignited the audience to ask questions and share their experiences.
The main themes that emerged were about how important it is to define what success means to you rather that constantly feel pressurised to compare yourself to others, when you might not even be seeing the true picture. We talked about how to measure success according to your own desires and wants and how important it is for us women not to undervalue ourselves and not be afraid to ask.
Our ideas are all unique and what we, as individuals, can offer, no one else can, we just lack the belief in ourselves sometimes and we struggle to ask for help when we need it. That’s where the importance of building strong networks and creating these opportunities to speak freely and share play a huge role in helping us empower each other.

A huge thank you to our wonderful photographer Leigh Farmer Photography for capturing the spirit of the evening, to Devonshire Club for the beautiful venue, to HANX and Neqta Ltd for spicing up our goodie bags.

Thanks to my fellow panelists for being open and honest in sharing their stories Spacemize, Together Further and The Merit club.

But most of all thank you all for attending and making it such a fab evening!

Great article. It's definitely a topic that has been playing on my mind lately and it's so encouraging to see that women are starting to open up about this and be encouraged as well as see role models who do break stereotypes by having both: children and successful businesses. The timing of this article seems to coincide perfectly with our collaboration with The Merit club, Spacemize and ToGetHer Further on an upcoming series of events Beneath The Surface. Look out for future events where we will be delving into similar topics.
Our first event is coming up next week! Grab a ticket while we still have a few remaining. you can find all the details under our events tab

Great article exploring women's advancement over time as well as exploring reasons why we are still lagging when it comes to investing. Something we are proud to have been advocating for the last 4 years now. This gives confidence that services such as ours are very needed and this summary is very much in line with our thinking and our educational approach.

"Even though the financial role that women play is changing, their levels of investing remain lower than men.
Women feel less knowledgeable generally and specifically lack confidence about investing.
Women tend to see investing as not for them – rather it is thought to be the preserve of ‘older, wealthier’ men. Something women feel is reinforced by the way much investment advertising is targeted.
The need to feel safe defines women’s approach to financial planning to a much greater extent than men’s."

Why is it that women are statistically more likely to place money in cash savings with zero interest than try something we perceive as higher risk - such as Direct Lending . Here we look at why women are potentially losing out.
