SUNDAY EVENING – A LITTLE BEHIND THE SCENES AT 360 HOME SECURITY

Firstly, after listening back to this video, I think some professional voice training might need to be added to my list! 😂

But putting the voiceover aside, there’s actually an important point behind this video.

We were recently in Hemel Hempstead carrying out a full CCTV service and maintenance check for one of our existing customers.

When we say we clean CCTV cameras, we don’t mean giving the lens a quick wipe so everything looks nice and shiny.

Over time, outdoor cameras collect dirt, grime, dust, cobwebs and, unfortunately, some very determined eight-legged tenants who seem to think CCTV cameras make excellent homes.

Our cleaning process therefore goes a little further.

The camera and surrounding area are thoroughly cleaned using appropriate cleaning products. We then apply a spider-repellent treatment around the appropriate areas to help discourage spiders from rebuilding their webs around the camera.

We also use WD-40 carefully around suitable parts of the camera housing — NEVER on the lens or optical surfaces — as part of the treatment we’ve developed over years of maintaining external CCTV equipment.

The lens then gets its final proper clean, leaving the camera ready to get back to doing what it was installed for: providing the clearest possible view of the property.

Why go to all this trouble?

Because a perfectly good CCTV camera can become far less useful when a spider decides to build a three-bedroom detached web directly across the lens — particularly at night when the camera’s illumination can make every strand stand out.

After more than 10 years of installing, servicing and maintaining CCTV systems, you pick up a few tricks along the way.

Some we keep to ourselves…

And occasionally, on a Sunday evening, we give one away. 😉

REAL-LIFE CCTV: A SERIOUS REMINDER TO BUSINESS OWNERS

This is a real-life incident that occurred in London, and it highlights just how quickly a normal working day can turn into a frightening and potentially dangerous situation.

A man enters a business premises apparently armed with a gun, putting the shopkeeper and those around him in an extremely vulnerable position.

🔴 CCTV SERVICE & MAINTENANCE – HEMEL HEMPSTEAD

Today we were back with one of our existing customers in Hemel Hempstead to carry out a full CCTV service and maintenance check.

It had been over a year since our last visit, and the cameras were definitely ready for some attention.

🕷️ Spider webs had built up around several of the cameras, and while this might not seem like a major problem during the daytime, at night it can make a significant difference.

When the camera's illumination comes on, nearby webs can reflect the light back towards the lens, affecting the clarity of the nighttime image and making viewing much more difficult.

As part of today's maintenance, we:

✅ Thoroughly cleaned the cameras and lenses
✅ Removed spider webs and debris from around the cameras
✅ Checked for spiders or contamination around the camera housings
✅ Checked the cameras were operating correctly
✅ Repositioned and realigned cameras where required
✅ Checked the overall viewing angles and image quality

🔴 ANOTHER SYSTEM CHECKED, SERVICED & GIVEN THE GREEN LIGHT ✅

Out early this morning to Hemel Hempstead, arriving on site at 10am to carry out a full Service & Maintenance inspection on one of our customer’s security systems.

First up was the Pyronix wireless intruder alarm.

🔧 Full engineer inspection
🔋 Batteries replaced
📡 Device & signal tests carried out
🚶 PIR walk tests completed
⚙️ Diagnostic and system tests completed
✅ Final test run passed

Everything came back working as it should, and the alarm system has been given the green light.

As part of the customer’s ongoing package, they also have their Pyronix mobile app, allowing them to keep an eye on their alarm while away from the property and receive notifications directly to their phone if the system is activated.

But this customer went one step further…

They also have AI CCTV protecting the outside perimeter of the property.

That means they have two layers of security:

📹 AI CCTV watching and monitoring the outside perimeter
🚨 Pyronix wireless alarm protecting the property internally

Both systems can be accessed from their mobile phone, giving the customer the ability to SECURE | PROTECT | MONITOR their property whether they're at home or away.

📍 TODAY’S CCTV INSTALLATION – GREEN STREET, EAST LONDON

This morning, 360 Home Security is out in Green Street, East London, upgrading a customer’s older 1080p analogue CCTV system to the latest KLEAR IP CCTV technology.

The customer has started with our 2-camera IP package, with the option of adding up to 4 additional cameras for even greater coverage.

His existing system provided the traditional black-and-white image at night. The upgrade gives him a significant improvement:

Why Properly Weatherproofing CCTV Connections Matters

Another CCTV fault call-out – and a good example of why the small details matter.

This week, 360 Home Security attended another customer call-out to investigate why one of their external CCTV cameras had suddenly stopped working.

Once we removed the camera and opened the deep weatherproof mounting base, the cause became clear.

The previous installer had done one thing correctly: the camera connections and Ethernet cable had been placed inside a deep weatherproof camera base.

However, one very important additional layer of protection had been missed.

The RJ45 Ethernet connection between the network cable and the camera had not been properly protected using the waterproof RJ45 connector gland and seal.

As the photographs show, moisture had eventually reached the connection. Both the RJ45 plug on the Ethernet cable and the connection on the camera had developed substantial corrosion.

That corrosion can interfere with both the network data connection and PoE (Power over Ethernet) supplying the camera, eventually resulting in an intermittent connection or the camera stopping altogether.

Why a Deep Base Alone Isn't Enough

A good-quality deep camera base provides an important layer of weather protection and helps keep CCTV connections concealed.

However, at 360 Home Security, we don't rely solely on the enclosure.

Where the camera manufacturer provides a waterproof RJ45 gland/sealing assembly, we correctly fit and seal the RJ45 connection before it is concealed inside the weather-resistant camera base.

In other words, we use two layers of protection:

1. The RJ45 connection itself is correctly sealed using its waterproof gland and seals.

2. The completed connection is then concealed inside the appropriate deep weather-resistant camera base.

It's a relatively small detail during installation, but it can make a significant difference to the long-term reliability of an outdoor CCTV system.

What Happens Now?

In this particular case, the damaged Ethernet termination will need to be removed and a new RJ45 connector fitted and tested.

The camera connection will also need to be inspected and tested because corrosion is visible on the camera side of the connection.

Once everything has been repaired and tested, the connection can be properly weatherproofed to help prevent the same problem occurring again.

It's the Details That Matter

When you're installing CCTV outdoors, simply getting a camera working on installation day isn't enough.

The installation needs to be designed to continue working through rain, moisture, temperature changes and years of British weather.

That's why at 360 Home Security, we pay attention to the details you may never see once we've finished the installation.

Because sometimes it's the smallest part of an installation that determines how reliable the whole system will be.
