October half term is coming up, and with pupils off site it is a good time for schools and colleges to get maintenance and upgrade work done without disrupting lessons.

A few things worth looking at over the break:

• Updating access control permissions for staff who joined or left in September
• Fire alarm servicing and emergency lighting tests
• Checking fire doors are closing and latching properly
• Reviewing CCTV coverage now the evenings are getting darker
• Servicing gates and barriers before the winter

All of our engineers are DBS checked, and we can plan work around your site's schedule. If you have jobs you would like completed over half term, get in touch with our team.

Our latest case study is from Bader College at Queen’s University Canada, the international campus of Queen's University, based at Herstmonceux Castle in East Sussex.

The college's access control handles were no longer working, and its fire alarm system was out of date and causing regular faults. As the castle is a historic building, we needed to keep new cabling to an absolute minimum.

We installed a Salto SPACE access control system using BLUEnet wireless technology across 175 doors, along with a Hyfire wireless fire detection system that brings the site up to Category L2. The college now has full audit trails and flexible access management, with very little disruption to the building itself.

We're pleased to confirm that ECS has renewed its SafeContractor approval for another year.

SafeContractor independently assesses our health and safety documentation and processes against a recognised standard. Our approval covers fire alarms, fire extinguishers, intruder alarms, CCTV, access control, door entry and automated gates.

For the clients and facilities teams we work with, it means one less thing to check when bringing a contractor onto site.

Throwback to 19th September, when we joined the HQR London Summer Ball at Grosvenor House for a black-tie evening.

It was a fantastic night celebrating London's High Quality Residential sector and raising money for The Lighthouse Charity and The Construction Youth Trust. Thanks to everyone involved!

L1, L2, L3, L4, L5, P1, P2... do you know what your fire alarm category actually means?

The category isn’t simply a label. It defines the level and extent of automatic fire detection provided within a building and is an important part of how the system is designed.

We’ve put together a straightforward guide explaining the different categories, what they mean and where they’re typically applied.

It's Fire Door Safety Week. The ideal time to talk about what often goes wrong with fire doors.

From damaged seals and the wrong closers to doors simply propped open, these are the issues we come across most in commercial inspections. Small things, but they're often the difference between a fire door doing its job and not.

We've listed our top 10 on the website: https://insights.ecssystems.co.uk/top-10-fire-door-failures/

SALTO access control is designed to do more than manage everyday access — it can also support safer emergency response.

When integrated with a fire alarm system, SALTO-controlled doors can be configured to respond appropriately when an alarm is activated, helping ensure security measures don’t compromise safe evacuation.

At ECS, we design and install integrated security solutions that consider the bigger picture, helping clients create safer, more resilient environments tailored to the way their buildings operate.
