A recent analysis showed that only 35% of the world’s major shipping companies have made 2050 net zero commitments, comparing unfavourably with other industry sectors. But there is increasing evidence that setting a net zero target is no guarantee that an organisation has an adequate plan to achieve it.

According to the 2022 Net Zero Stocktake Report, “…overall the transparency and integrity of existing net zero pledges are far from sufficient to ensure a timely transition to global net zero GHG emissions to achieve the Paris Agreement’s long-term temperature goal. Across the board, an enormous need for greater standardisation and operationalisation of net zero targets is needed.”

We’ve picked a couple of key stats out of the report in this short video, but you can download the report free of charge by visiting https://zerotracker.net/analysis/net-zero-stocktake-2022

Harvesting Blue Energy: Triboelectric Nanogenerators

Covering 70% of the earth’s surface the ocean is the largest reservoir of energy on earth. Researchers from The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) have been exploring how to harness that ocean energy to address the world energy crisis and the pollution problems caused by thermal power generation using a new device called a water-tube based triboelectric nanogenerator (WT-TENG) opening new possibilities for blue energy harvesting. Funding for logistics startups almost doubled in 2021 compared to 2020 and also shifted to different logistics subsectors according to analysis of more than 500 startups accounting for more than USD$80 billion in funding. As the pandemic brought the vulnerability of supply chains into focus McKinsey finds that investors in the logistics industry have become more aware of the challenges, and the corresponding opportunities for growth, and are investing in new ventures with larger funding rounds.

Tidal power has been generated since the mid-1960s but now Japan is harnessing deep ocean currents to help meet its net-zero 2050 target. It’s estimated that its Kairyu system could generate up to 200 gigawatts of energy, and as ocean currents don’t change speed or direction it would be operational 70% of the time, far more than intermittent sources like wind and solar which only generate 29% and 15% of the time.

The Japanese are hoping tidal power will be a significant contributor to the country's renewable energy stock.
